Product description
The blue glass bottle with a dropper, 50 ml, is designed for cosmetics that are dispensed by the drop and need protection from light. The coloured glass filters out part of the light that speeds up the oxidation of vegetable oils and the breakdown of sensitive active ingredients. The white glossy dropper draws from the bottle only as much as is needed for a single use. The 50 ml volume corresponds to a common pack size of face serum or face oil for several weeks of use. Both the bottle and the dropper are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products.
What the set is suitable for
The dropper draws up liquid and slightly viscous contents, so the set is suitable mainly for:
- Face and hair oils – single vegetable oils as well as blends with essential oils that are sensitive to light.
- Oil-based and anhydrous serums – products with vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 or oil extracts that are applied a few drops at a time.
- Water-based and gel serums of lower viscosity – hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and similar active ingredients in a water base, as long as they can be drawn up with a dropper.
- Tinctures and alcohol extracts – the glass does not react with the contents and does not discolour.
- Active ingredients and fragrance blends for further dispensing – for recipes where an ingredient is added by the drop and accuracy matters.
The dropper cannot draw up thick gels, creams and emulsions with high viscosity. Jars or bottles with a pump are more suitable for such contents.
How the set works
A medicine bottle is a bottle shape with straight walls and a narrower neck that is closed with a thread. The dropper consists of a glass tube, a silicone bulb and a white glossy polypropylene (PP) thread. The length of the tube is adapted to the height of the bottle, so it reaches almost to the bottom and the contents can be drawn up even from an almost empty bottle. The glass tube does not discolour from oils and does not absorb fragrance, which is an advantage over plastic droppers for products with essential oils.
Squeezing the bulb draws the contents into the tube, and the drops are then released gradually according to the pressure. With oils the drops are larger and slower, with water-based serums they are smaller and faster. The number of drops per dose therefore depends on the viscosity of the formulation.
For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils, alcohol or solvents, check the behaviour of the silicone bulb and the tightness of the thread with the specific contents before filling the whole batch.
Volume and filling
The nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The brimful volume given in the parameters is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them is a reserve for the dropper tube, which reaches into the contents once the bottle is closed, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. If the bottle is overfilled, the contents overflow over the neck when the tube is inserted and soil the thread, which then seals less well.
Pour serums and oils into the bottle only after they have cooled to room temperature. Glass tolerates sudden temperature changes poorly, and warm contents change volume as they cool, so the final level will not be correct.
Good to know
- Preparation before first filling – wash the bottle and the dropper, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in the tube would introduce moisture into an oil-based serum.
- Reuse – the glass can be used repeatedly after washing and disinfection. With the silicone bulb, check that it has not softened or changed shape, and replace the dropper if necessary.
- Transporting filled bottles – the bottle is closed by a thread and a silicone bulb, so transport the pack upright and check the tightness beforehand.
- 18 mm neck – you will find closures with the same neck type and other ready-made bottle and closure combinations in the Handymade range. If you choose your own combination, check the tightness and dispensing with the specific formulation.
- Recycling – the bottle belongs in glass recycling, while the dropper combines glass, plastic and silicone, so separate it from the bottle before disposal.
