Carrageenan (E 407) is a thickener made from the red seaweed Chondrus crispus, which is used as a thickener, gelling agent and stabilizer. Carrageenan is a vegan version of animal gelatine.

In cosmetics, it serves as an emulsifier. Due to its high content of minerals such as zinc, manganese, calcium and magnesium, it is an excellent skin nourishing agent .
Gels with carrageenan are gentle and moisturize the skin and hair (in shampoos it makes it easier to comb the hair, which is then smooth and shiny), strengthens the hair structure and restores its elasticity.

It shows a very good compatibility with surfactants, which makes it possible to create a foaming gel. It is stable over a wide pH range.
It is insoluble in cold water, but easily soluble in hot water (80-90°C), insoluble in organic solvents and vegetable oils.

There are three types of carrageenan: Kappa-Carrageenan has one sulfate disaccharide group, Iota-Carrageenan has two sulfates, and Lambda-Carrageenan has three.
