Product description

Cocoa CO₂-se extract is an aromatic selective extract obtained from cocoa butter (Theobroma cacao) by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. This process takes place in two steps – first, the cocoa beans are pressed and completely defatted, then aromas are gently obtained from the cocoa butter using counter-current CO₂ extraction. It is a CO₂-se (selective extract) – a selective extract containing predominantly volatile aromatic substances that give products a characteristic chocolate scent. It has a white to light-brown colour, is solid at room temperature and at 40 °C turns into a liquid oil with an intense sweet cocoa aroma.

Type of extraction: Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (CO₂)
Designation: CO₂-se – selective extract (selective extract with volatile aromatic substances)
D/E ratio: 19–21 kg of cocoa butter per 1 kg of extract
Composition: 100 % CO₂-se extract from cocoa butter

FAQ

What is the difference between CO₂-se and CO₂-to cocoa extract?

CO₂-se is a selective extract – a selective extract that contains mainly volatile aromatic components (e.g. pyrazines, esters, aldehydes). A CO₂-to extract, on the other hand, would also contain fats, waxes and resins. Therefore, CO₂-se extract has a purer scent and is ideal for perfuming and aromatic cosmetic products.

Does cocoa CO₂ extract also have a colouring effect?

No, this selective extract does not contain colour pigments from cocoa beans. The product is white to light-brown and will not colour the final product.

Is cocoa CO₂ extract also suitable for lip balms?

Yes, thanks to its unique aromatic profile it is very popular in lip balms and lip butters. It gives them a gentle, sweet chocolate aroma without the use of synthetic perfumes.

What does the designation “CO₂-se” mean?

The designation CO₂-se means selective extract – a selective CO₂ extract that is obtained under milder pressure and temperature conditions, so that only volatile substances are extracted. The result is an extract similar to an essential oil, but with higher purity and stability.
