Product description

Pistachio oil, refined is a light plant-based emollient from the seeds of the common pistachio (Pistacia vera), obtained by cold pressing followed by refining. In formulations it acts as a softening oil component that spreads easily, absorbs quickly and leaves a smooth, non-greasy feel. It is the go-to choice when you need a nourishing yet lightweight oil for facial and body care, massage blends or hair oils.

The refined version will not affect the scent or shade of the finished product, making it suitable for formulations where a clean appearance matters and the chosen fragrance needs to shine through. The oil has both cosmetic and food-grade quality.

Why choose pistachio oil

  • Light, well-absorbed emollient – according to the manufacturer's data, the oil absorbs quickly without a noticeable greasy film, making it suitable for daily creams and facial oils where heavier oils feel uncomfortable.
  • Softening and smoothing the skin – the oil forms a fine protective film on the skin surface that limits water evaporation. This effect is most visible on dry, rough and cracked skin on the hands, feet and elbows.
  • Balanced fatty acid profile – oleic acid predominates (40 – 60 %), complemented by linoleic acid (28 – 38 %). Oleic acid gives the oil a nourishing, gliding character, while linoleic acid contributes to a lighter feel on the skin.
  • Antioxidants and skin calming – the manufacturer states that the oil contains antioxidants and helps reduce the feeling of irritation and redness. These are manufacturer claims for the raw material, not proven effects of the finished product.
  • Hair care – in hair oils, serums and masks, the oil helps according to the manufacturer to smooth the hair shaft, reduce frizz and give hair shine and softness.

What refining brings

Refining includes degumming, neutralisation, bleaching and deodorisation. It removes natural pigments, odour compounds and free impurities from the oil and, according to the manufacturer, improves its stability and versatility. The result is a clear, pale yellow oil without scent that will not tint light creams and allows essential oils or fragrance compositions to stand out.

Use in formulation

Pistachio oil is insoluble in water and miscible with other vegetable oils, butters and esters. It therefore enters aqueous systems only through an emulsifier, or through a solubiliser at low concentrations in tonics and sprays.

In emulsions it is added to the oil phase. It tolerates hot processing up to approximately 80 °C, which is sufficient for standard emulsification with wax-based emulsifiers and butters. With cold-process emulsifiers it is added cold without restriction. Higher temperatures or prolonged heating are not necessary and needlessly stress the unsaturated fatty acids.

In anhydrous products (facial and body oils, massage blends, balms) pistachio oil can constitute the entire oil component. Due to its linoleic acid content, we recommend adding an antioxidant such as Tocopherol to the formulation to extend the stability of the oil phase.

Combined with heavier butters (shea, cocoa) it lightens the texture and improves spreadability.

Suitable for products such as

  • Facial and body oils – on their own or blended with other light oils, when you want nourishment without a greasy feel.
  • Hand and foot creams – for dry, rough and cracked skin, where you will appreciate the softening and protective film.
  • Moisturising creams and body lotions – as the primary or supplementary emollient of the oil phase.
  • Hair oils, serums and masks – for smoothing and shine, or in oil treatments for the scalp.
  • Massage blends and bath oils – for good slip and a neutral scent that you can easily complement with essential oils.
  • Balms and solid sticks – as the liquid oil component alongside waxes and butters.

What to know when formulating

The oil is intended primarily for leave-on products, where it remains on the skin and can fulfil its softening function. It can be used in rinse-off products (shower oils, cleansing balms), but its benefit will be reduced.

It is suitable for customers with sensitive skin, as the refined version contains no fragrance or colouring substances that could cause irritation. With every new formulation it is recommended to test the finished product on a small area of skin.

Pistachio oil comes from the seeds of the pistachio, which belongs to the nut family. If you sell finished products, consider providing information for customers with nut allergies.

At higher concentrations in emulsions the oil can gently soften the consistency of a cream. If you want a thicker texture, adjust the amount of thickener or solid fats. Stability and compatibility with a specific emulsifier should be verified in the finished formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Is pistachio oil soluble in water?
No, pistachio oil is insoluble in water. It is incorporated into creams, lotions and other aqueous products through the oil phase with an emulsifier. It can be added to tonics or sprays in small amounts only with a solubiliser. With other vegetable oils, butters and esters it is freely miscible.
Does refined pistachio oil smell of pistachios?
No, refined pistachio oil is odourless and has only a pale yellow colour. Refining removes the odour and colour compounds that would otherwise give the oil its own scent and shade. As a result it will not tint the finished product and will not affect the fragrance of chosen essential oils or fragrance compositions.
Can pistachio oil be added to a cream at high temperature?
Yes, pistachio oil can be heated together with the oil phase to approximately 80 °C. This is sufficient for standard emulsification with wax-based emulsifiers and for melting butters. Prolonged heating at higher temperatures is not necessary and adversely affects the unsaturated fatty acids, so it is recommended to emulsify immediately upon reaching the working temperature.
Is pistachio oil suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, refined pistachio oil is suitable for sensitive and dry skin as well. It contains no fragrance or colouring substances, leaves a light, non-greasy film and, according to the manufacturer's data, helps reduce the feeling of irritation. As it is an oil derived from nuts, it is recommended to try the finished product on a small area of skin first.
Is pistachio oil suitable for hair care?
Yes, pistachio oil is used in hair oils, serums and masks. According to the manufacturer it helps to hydrate hair, smooth frizz and add shine and softness. Thanks to its light texture it is also suitable for hair ends without weighing them down, and it can be combined with other hair oils, such as argan or jojoba.
