Product description
KeraGreen pillar is a soy wax for candles poured into moulds, which stand on their own without a container once cooled. It is made by hydrogenating soybean oil, is of plant origin, and is paraffin-free and GMO-free. It is intended for makers of cylindrical, conical and shaped candles who want to work with a plant-based wax instead of paraffin.
Key features
- Wax for moulded candles – once set, the cast candle is removed from the mould and holds its shape on its own, without the support of a container.
- Plant origin – it is based on hydrogenated soybean oil. The wax contains no paraffin and no ingredients of animal origin, and it is Vegan certified; the manufacturer holds ECOCERT certification.
- Can be scented – fragrance oils intended for candles are mixed into the melted wax. Check on a test pour how much fragrance oil the wax can hold without sweating on the surface.
- Low natural colour – on the ASTM D1500 scale it has a value of 1 at most, so candle dyes give a clean shade. It is supplied in solid form, in a colour from white to beige.
- Not classified as hazardous – under the CLP Regulation, a safety data sheet is not required for this wax.
Technical values for production
The wax solidifies in the range of 43–52 °C. Penetration at 25 °C is 25–40 dmm, a value that expresses the hardness of the solidified wax. The viscosity of the melted wax at 100 °C is 7–10 cSt. All values are ranges, and a specific batch may vary within them.
How to make candles
Melt the wax in a water bath or in a wax melter, stirring occasionally; direct heating on a hob is not recommended. Add the fragrance oil and dye to the melted wax and mix thoroughly.
Before pouring, prepare the mould with the wick threaded through and the opening sealed. Pour the wax when it is fully liquid but not overheated. Check the suitable pouring temperature and cooling speed for your mould and candle size with a test pour.
As the wax cools, a sinkhole may form around the wick. Fix it with a second pour of a smaller amount of wax at the same temperature, or by piercing the set layer over the sinkhole before topping up.
Once fully cooled, remove the candle from the mould. From silicone and polycarbonate moulds, the cast candle usually comes out easily.
What it is suitable for
The wax is intended for freestanding candles: pillars, cones, spheres, figures and relief castings. It is not primarily intended for jar candles; for those, choose a wax for jar candles.
Good to know
The choice of wick depends on the candle diameter and on the amount of fragrance oil and dye. The correct size can only be determined by a burn test. Let the cast candle cure before lighting it for the first time, so that the fragrance settles in the wax.
Soy wax reacts to sudden temperature changes during cooling. Slow, even cooling at room temperature without a draught gives a smoother surface.
The wax is insoluble in water and does not mix with water or with hydrosols. Keep your tools dry.
This product is intended for candle making.
