Product description
Benzoin resin (benzoe) brings a sweet, warm balsamic scent to cosmetics. This product is an extract of Styrax benzoin resin dissolved in dipropylene glycol, supplied as a pourable liquid that can be measured and blended directly into a formulation. It is used as a fragrance ingredient in perfumes, skin care, body care, hair care, and aromatherapy.
The resin makes up 20 % of the blend; the remaining 80 % is dipropylene glycol as the carrier. In addition to the fragrance, the manufacturer also states soothing and antioxidant effects on the skin.
Key benefits
- Sweet balsamic scent – a warm fragrance note for perfumes, fragrance blends, and skin care.
- Skin soothing – according to the manufacturer, benzoe soothes irritated skin and may reduce redness.
- Antioxidant activity – the manufacturer states the presence of antioxidants that help protect the skin from external stressors.
- Scalp care – according to the manufacturer, it may soothe an irritated scalp, improve hair manageability, and impart fragrance.
- Easy to process – the liquid form is measured and blended without prior dissolution.
Use in formulation
The product is soluble in alcohol and glycols, making it easiest to incorporate into alcohol-based perfumes, eau de toilettes, and glycol concentrates. The manufacturer does not state solubility in water or oils. For toners, sprays, and anhydrous oil-based products, first carry out a small-scale test.
The recommended processing temperature is up to 40 °C. In emulsions, it is added only to the cooled mass, together with the other fragrance ingredients.
For creams and lotions, add benzoe only during the cooling phase below 40 °C. Before blending, pre-dilute it in a small amount of alcohol or glycol so that it disperses evenly throughout the mass.
Dosage is governed by the IFRA limits for the specific product type. The threshold differs for a perfume, body cream, shampoo, or candle. Before incorporating into a formulation, verify the product category and the corresponding maximum level in the IFRA documentation provided with the product.
Suitable for products such as
- Perfumes and solid perfumes – sweet balsamic scent in warm compositions.
- Facial creams and serums for mature, dry, and sensitive skin – for fragrance and soothing character according to manufacturer data.
- Body lotions, oils, and after-sun products – the manufacturer lists these among typical applications.
- Hair care – for fragrance and scalp care.
- Diffusers and aromatherapy blends – warm balsamic scent in fragrance blends.
Good to know
The product contains fragrance allergens listed in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. Where they exceed the threshold level in the finished product, they must be declared in the ingredient list. Specific allergens and their concentrations are provided in the product documentation.
The raw material is subject to classification under the CLP Regulation. Before working with the concentrate, read the safety data sheet, and for skin-contact products observe the IFRA limits for the relevant category.
The extract has an orange to brown colour; at higher levels it may slightly tint light-coloured products. For white emulsions and clear perfumes, verify the final shade by carrying out a test.
The product is certified as vegan and contains no animal-derived ingredients.
Difference between benzoe in glycol and benzoe in alcohol
Benzoe is also available as a tincture in denatured alcohol. Both variants contain the same resin extract and differ only in the carrier. The dipropylene glycol version contains no alcohol and is therefore suitable for formulations where alcohol is not desired. The alcohol tincture can be incorporated directly into alcohol-based perfumes. The choice depends on which carrier can be included in the formulation without additional adjustments.
