A plastic bottle with a capacity of 500 ml and a flip-top cap is a container for products used in larger amounts, most commonly in the bathroom: shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps, conditioners, and body lotions. The bottle is made of transparent PET, which is lightweight and shatter-resistant, so there is no risk of broken pieces in the shower or by the bath. The clear wall also lets you see the colour of the product and how much remains.

The flip-top cap opens with a single finger and stays closed when snapped shut. The contents are dispensed through a small opening by tilting and gently squeezing the bottle — there is no need to unscrew or set aside the cap. Both the bottle and cap are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The set is intended for cosmetics and technical products.

Which products is the set suitable for

A flip-top cap works best with liquid to medium-viscosity products that flow freely towards the opening and can be dispensed with gentle pressure on the bottle wall.

Shampoos and shower gels – gel-consistency products are dispensed in small amounts through the opening, and the cap can be operated with a wet hand.
Liquid soaps and bath foams – the larger volume is suitable for a family-size pack or for refilling smaller dispensers.
Conditioners and body lotions – thinner emulsions work well; a thick cream or body butter is difficult to squeeze out of the bottle.
Massage and body oils – the cap opening releases oil in a narrow stream, making it easy to dispense directly into the palm.
Home care products – liquid laundry detergents or homemade dishwashing liquids, provided they do not contain strong acids, bases, or solvents.

With a new formula, it is worth filling one bottle as a test. Very thin liquids flow quickly through a flip-top cap and are harder to control; products that are too thick are difficult to squeeze out. Only after such a test does it make sense to fill an entire batch.

Nominal and total volume

The figure of 500 ml is the nominal volume — the quantity the bottle is designed to hold under standard filling conditions. The total volume up to the rim of the neck is slightly larger. The difference serves as headspace for the cap and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the rim. An overfilled bottle may leak when closing or squeezing, and with thicker products there is insufficient air to help push the contents out.

What to know before filling

Preparing the container. Before the first use, wash the bottle and cap with lukewarm water, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allow to dry completely. Dry the cap in the open position, as water tends to linger longest in the dispensing opening and the hinge.

PET does not tolerate high temperatures. Allow hot-process products to cool to room temperature before filling, and do not wash the bottle with boiling water. Hot contents may deform it and the cap may then fail to seal properly.

Material resistance. The bottle is intended for finished products, not concentrated raw materials. Do not expose it to aggressive chemicals.

Label. A self-adhesive label adheres best to a dry, degreased surface, so apply it before filling or after thoroughly wiping the bottle clean. The dimensions needed for label design are listed in the specifications.

Yes, both the bottle and the flip-top cap can be refilled after thorough cleaning, preferably with the same type of product. Rinse the bottle with lukewarm soapy water and wash the cap in the open position so that the dispensing opening is also cleaned. Both parts should then be disinfected and allowed to dry completely. A scratched, deformed, or odour-retaining bottle is best replaced with a new one.

Is a PET bottle suitable for products containing essential oils or alcohol?

Yes, a PET bottle is suitable for finished products in which essential oils or alcohol are diluted at typical cosmetic concentrations. This includes shampoos, shower gels, and body lotions scented with essential or fragrance oils. Undiluted essential oils and strong solvents may, however, damage or cloud the plastic, so they should not be filled into this container. It is advisable to test any new formula on a sample bottle first.

Can the flip-top cap on the plastic bottle be replaced with a different closure?
