Product description

Fragrance oil Sandalwood & Myrrh adds a woody, balsamic scent with a warming character to soaps, deodorants, bath bombs and diffusers. The composition is of synthetic origin and serves a single purpose in a formulation: perfuming. It is handled the same way as other fragrance oils, added at the end to the cooled mass.

Fragrance character

The base is formed by the woody tone of sandalwood; myrrh adds a deeper, resinous note. The result is warming rather than sweet. The composition contains no components of natural origin, which should be taken into account if you want to label the finished product as natural.

Use in formulation

The fragrance oil is insoluble in water and dissolves in oil. In emulsions it is added during the cooling phase, when the mass has a temperature below 40 °C, to prevent the volatile fragrance components from unnecessarily evaporating. In anhydrous products (balms, body butters, oil serums) it is blended into the finished base. For water-based products such as tonics, refreshing sprays or water-based diffusers, a solubiliser is required; otherwise the fragrance will separate and form droplets on the surface.

In cold process soap the fragrance oil behaves calmly. In a practical test by a soap maker, the mass thickened slightly after adding the fragrance, without sudden solidification, and did not discolour. At a normal working pace, it can be poured into the mould and multicoloured patterns can be created. The fragrance just needs to be added shortly before pouring and blended in smoothly.

In a cold process soap test, the Sandalwood & Myrrh fragrance barely accelerated trace and did not discolour the mass, making it suitable for light and patterned soaps.

In bath bombs and salts, the fragrance oil is blended into the oil component or directly into the dry mixture before pressing. In household cleaning products, dishwashing products and fabric care, it is added to the finished product at the end of mixing. Here too, a solubiliser is required in water-based formulations.

Suitable for products such as

  • Cold process and bar soaps – fragrance with no effect on the colour of the mass.
  • Deodorants and antiperspirants – a woody scent that is neither sweet nor floral.
  • Bath bombs and salts – the fragrance is released as it dissolves in water.
  • Creams, balms and body butters – added to the cooled emulsion or to the finished anhydrous base.
  • Diffusers and aromatherapy – with a solubiliser for water-based diffusers.
  • Cleaning products, laundry and dishwashing – perfuming of household products.
  • Intimate hygiene and decorative cosmetics – as a fragrance component.

Safety and labelling

The fragrance oil is classified under the CLP Regulation and contains hazardous substances. The packaging bears the pictograms GHS07 (irritant, sensitisation) and GHS09 (hazardous to the environment). Therefore, handle the concentrate with gloves and do not allow it to drain into the sewer in case of spillage. Details on safe handling can be found in the safety data sheet for the product.

The fragrance contains perfume allergens in accordance with Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. In finished cosmetics, they must be listed in the ingredient list if they exceed the specified limits, so verify the percentage of fragrance in the product before printing labels.

The product contains one or more components classified as CMR; however, the composition as a whole does not have CMR classification.

The colour of the composition ranges from colourless to yellow. At higher dosage in white bases, we recommend checking the shade on a small sample.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Sandalwood & Myrrh fragrance oil suitable for cold process soap?
Yes, in a practical cold process soap test the fragrance performed well. The soap mass only thickened slightly after adding it, without rapid solidification, and did not discolour, so it can also be used in light soaps and layered patterns. The fragrance just needs to be added shortly before pouring and blended in evenly.
Is the Sandalwood & Myrrh fragrance oil water-soluble?
No, the fragrance oil is oil-soluble and does not dissolve in water. In emulsions it is added during the cooling phase at a temperature below 40 °C. For water-based products such as tonics or sprays, a solubiliser is required; otherwise the fragrance will separate and form droplets on the surface.
What is the difference between the Sandalwood & Myrrh fragrance oil and a sandalwood essential oil?
The fragrance oil is a perfume composition of synthetic origin; the essential oil is a distillate from sandalwood. The composition is intended for cosmetics as well as household products, from deodorants to laundry. However, a product with fragrance oil cannot be labelled as perfumed with a natural essential oil or as natural.
Do I need to declare allergens on the label for the Sandalwood & Myrrh fragrance oil?
Yes, if the concentration of allergens in the finished product exceeds the limits of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. The fragrance oil contains perfume allergens listed in Annex III; their amount in the final product depends on the percentage of fragrance in the formulation. Before preparing the label, the allergen content in the finished product must therefore be calculated.
Can the Sandalwood & Myrrh fragrance oil be used in cleaning products and for laundry?
Yes, the fragrance is also intended for perfuming household cleaning products, dishwashing products and fabric care. It is added at the end of mixing to the finished product. In water-based formulations, a solubiliser is required to keep the fragrance dispersed.
