Product description
A white plastic 150 ml bottle with a black pump is a ready-made set for products that are dispensed with a press: body lotions, liquid soaps, shampoos, conditioners, cleansing milks or cleansing gels. The bottle is made of PET, so it is light and does not break when dropped, which is useful in the bathroom, when travelling and when packaging a larger batch of products. The white opaque plastic hides the contents and limits light exposure, so it also suits recipes with vegetable oils or extracts that change colour faster in light. The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics and is also approved for direct contact with food, so it can also hold homemade syrup, dressing or cooking oil.
What it is suitable for
The pump works with liquid to medium-thick products, which the dip tube draws up and the pump pushes out without effort. The thicker the product, the more force the press needs and the smaller the actual dose.
- Body lotions and light creams – thin O/W emulsions are dispensed evenly and without hands touching the contents, which reduces the risk of introducing microorganisms into the bottle.
- Liquid soaps, shampoos and shower gels – 150 ml is enough for a trial batch or a travel pack, and the bottle takes up little space by the sink.
- Massage and body oils – oils flow through the pump without problems. After use, wipe the pump nozzle so that no residue is left on it that would thicken over time.
- Cleansing milks and make-up removers – one press corresponds to roughly one dose for the face.
- Food products – syrups, dressings, liquid oils. Both parts of the set are certified for food contact.
Thick creams, body butters and products with solid particles, for example scrubs, are not suitable for the pump. They clog it or it does not draw them up at all. Very thin liquids such as toners and hydrosols are better applied with a sprayer, as they run out of the pump in a stream and are difficult to dose.
How the pump works
One press releases approximately 1 ml of product. The value is indicative and depends on the thickness of the product and on whether you press the pump all the way down. The pump is empty when first used, so it needs to be pressed several times until the dip tube fills and the product starts to come out.
The dip tube is supplied longer than the height of the bottle so that it can be adjusted. Correctly set, it reaches just above the bottom, and then it draws up almost all of the contents. If it is too long, it bends, sticks to the bottom and the pump starts drawing in air before the bottle is empty.
Before fitting the pump, shorten the dip tube with a sharp knife using a straight cut so that it ends just above the bottom of the bottle. A slanted or frayed cut impairs suction.
Volume and filling
The nominal volume of 150 ml is the amount the bottle is designed for with normal filling. The physical volume up to the neck is greater. The difference is a reserve for the dip tube and the body of the pump, which take up part of the space once fitted, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled up to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If it is filled up to the neck, the product overflows when the pump is screwed on and remains on the thread, where it gradually dries and worsens the seal.
Good to know
- Preparation before first filling – wash the bottle and the pump, disinfect them with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol (pump it through several times) and leave to dry completely. Residual water in the dip tube dilutes the first doses and can cause spoilage in anhydrous products.
- Temperature of the filling – the bottle should be protected from heat and is not intended for hot filling. Let emulsions, liquid soaps and syrups cool to room temperature and only then pour them into the bottle.
- Material resistance – the packaging is not intended for aggressive chemicals. For recipes with a high proportion of essential oils, we recommend testing how the bottle and the pump behave with the specific formulation, especially during longer storage.
- Reuse – after thorough washing, pumping through clean water and drying, the set can be used again. There is no need to take the pump apart; it is enough to rinse it with warm water containing a small amount of cleaning product and then with clean water.
- Other closures – the bottle has a 24/410 neck finish. You can find other closures with the same type of neck and ready-made combinations in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend testing the seal, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with the specific formulation.
- Recycling – the bottle is made of PET, the pump of PP. Before disposal, unscrew the pump and sort both parts as plastic.
