A glass bottle with a white sprayer, 100 ml, is a ready-made combination of container and closure for water- and alcohol-based products that are applied by spraying – facial toners, hydrosols, hair sprays or refreshing body mists. Amber glass limits the light reaching the contents, which change colour and scent in the light, for example a hydrosol with essential oils or an extract. The white mechanical sprayer creates a fine mist and dispenses the product without the hands coming into contact with the contents, which reduces the risk of contaminating water-based formulations.

The flat top of the bottle leaves plenty of room for a label. The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. Certification for direct contact with food applies separately to the glass bottle; the sprayer does not have it, so the set as a whole is intended for cosmetic preparations.

What the set is suitable for

The mechanical sprayer is built for thin liquids similar to water. It works reliably with hydrosols, facial toners, low-viscosity hair sprays, alcohol-based fragrance sprays (body and room mists), solutions for refreshing the skin during the day and disinfecting solutions based on ethanol or isopropyl alcohol.

It is less suitable for oils and thicker preparations. The sprayer will not disperse a pure plant oil or a serum with glycerin and gums into a mist, the contents come out in drops and the mechanism clogs more quickly. For oil-based products, a bottle with a dropper or a pump is more suitable. Likewise, do not use the sprayer for emulsions and products with particles (scrubs, suspensions).

Nominal and total volume

Two volumes are distinguished for every bottle. The nominal volume is the amount the container is intended for under normal filling. The total volume to the brim is the physical volume up to the neck and is always slightly higher. The difference forms a reserve for the tube and the sprayer mechanism, which pushes out part of the volume once screwed on, and for the expansion of the contents with a change in temperature. Fill the bottle to the nominal volume, therefore, not to the brim. If it is overfilled, the contents leak out through the neck after the sprayer is fitted or the seal is compromised.

What is good to know

Preparation before first filling. Wash the bottle with warm water and a small amount of a mild cleaning agent, rinse thoroughly, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely neck down. Pump clean alcohol through the sprayer several times to rinse out the tube and the nozzle. Residual water in the container dilutes the product and impairs the effectiveness of the preservation.

Preservation of the contents. The sprayer limits contact between the contents and the hands, but each press draws air into the bottle. Water-based products in this container should therefore be preserved just as thoroughly as in any other; the container itself does not replace a preservative.

Alcohol-based and essential-oil contents. Glass withstands them without limitation. The sprayer is made of polypropylene, which normally tolerates ethanol and diluted essential oils. With a high proportion of essential oils or when using solvents, verify how the seal and the mechanism behave on a sample before a larger batch.

Temperature. A sudden thermal shock, for example hot contents poured into a cold bottle, can crack the glass. Fill products once they have cooled or temper the bottle first. Fit the sprayer only onto cooled contents.

Labelling. The flat wall of the bottle makes it possible to apply a label around the entire circumference. Apply the label to dry, degreased glass.

Recycling. Once the contents are used up, separate the sprayer from the bottle – the glass goes with glass, the sprayer with plastics.
