Product description

Fragrance oil, black currant

Fragrance oil with the scent of black currant adds fragrance to creams, shower gels, soaps, candles and household cleaning products. In a formulation it functions as a fragrance ingredient: it is added in a small amount at the end of production and gives the product a recognisable fruity scent. It is of synthetic origin.

It is suitable for rinse-off and leave-on products and works in emulsions, oil-based and alcohol-based systems.

What it is suitable for

  • Wide range of applications – body, hair and baby cosmetics, shower and bath preparations, deodorants, decorative cosmetics, household cleaning products and laundry and fabric care preparations.
  • Solubility in oil and alcohol – it can be incorporated into the oil phase of an emulsion, into body oils, balms, alcohol-based perfumes and candle wax.
  • Rinse-off and leave-on products – from soap and shampoo to cream that stays on the skin.

Use in formulation

The fragrance oil is insoluble in water. In emulsions it is added to the oil phase or into the finished emulsion during the cooling phase, at a temperature below 40 °C.

Fragrance oil on its own cannot be incorporated into tonics, face waters and other water-based products without an emulsifier. It needs a solubiliser in which it is first dispersed, and only then is the mixture added to the water. Check the amount of solubiliser on a small sample, as it depends on the rest of the formula.

Add the fragrance only after the mass has cooled below 40 °C and mix briefly but thoroughly.

In alcohol-based products (perfumes, aftershaves, air fresheners) it dissolves directly in the alcohol. In oil-based products and balms it is blended into the cooled oil phase. For candles it is added to melted wax before pouring.

The dosage for individual product types is set by the product's IFRA certificate. Upper limits are defined for each category (IFRA 1 to 12, from lip preparations through creams and soaps to candles) and must be observed when developing a formula.

Cold-process soap. In a practical test in cold-process soap, the black currant fragrance oil did not accelerate trace and did not thicken the batter, leaving enough time for pouring, layering or patterns. It colours the batter only slightly: after approximately 15 minutes it took on a light orange tint. Bear this in mind for light or white soaps.

Suitable for products such as

  • Shower gels, liquid and bar soaps – rinse-off products where a fruity scent works well.
  • Body creams, lotions and oils – leave-on cosmetics where the scent remains on the skin.
  • Shampoos and conditioners – hair care is among the recommended areas of application.
  • Candles and air fresheners – the fragrance oil is soluble in oil and wax.
  • Cleaning products and laundry – all-purpose cleaners, hand dishwashing products and laundry detergents.

Good to know

The fragrance oil is classified under the CLP Regulation and contains hazardous substances indicated by the GHS07 (irritant, sensitisation) and GHS09 (harmful to the aquatic environment) pictograms. It also contains one or more fragrance allergens listed in Annex III of Regulation 1223/2009. If their content in the finished cosmetic exceeds the limit set by the Regulation, they must be listed separately on the label. Details on composition and safe handling are in the safety data sheet available with the product.

For baby cosmetics, lip preparations and the eye area, use the fragrance oil only at the dosage permitted for that category by the IFRA certificate.

The product has not been tested on animals, and contains no materials of animal origin, microplastics or ingredients classified as CMR.

Frequently asked questions

Is black currant fragrance oil suitable for cold-process soap?
Yes, in a practical test in cold-process soap it did not accelerate trace and the batter remained easy to work with. Colouration was mild: after approximately 15 minutes the batter took on a light orange tint. Bear this in mind for white soap; for coloured soaps it is not significant.
Is black currant fragrance oil soluble in water?
No, it is not soluble in water. It dissolves in oil and alcohol. For tonics, face waters and other water-based products it is added via a solubiliser in which the fragrance oil is first dispersed, otherwise it will separate from the water.
At what temperature is black currant fragrance oil added to a cream?
It is added during the cooling phase, at a temperature below 40 °C. It can go into the emulsion either with the oil phase or into the finished cream after cooling. After adding, briefly and thoroughly mix the mass.
Can black currant fragrance oil be used in candles?
Yes, candles of all types including container candles are among the categories for which the fragrance oil is intended. It dissolves in wax and is added to melted wax before pouring. The maximum amount for candles is determined by the IFRA certificate and the ability of the specific wax to retain the scent.
Is black currant fragrance oil natural or synthetic?
The fragrance oil is of synthetic origin. It is composed of fragrance substances that mimic the scent of black currant, not by distillation of plants as with essential oils. For products labelled as natural, verify that the fragrance ingredient meets the requirements of the chosen standard.
Does black currant fragrance oil have to be listed on a cosmetic label?
Yes, in the ingredient list it is listed as Parfum. The product contains fragrance allergens as listed in Annex III of Regulation 1223/2009. If their amount in the finished product exceeds the set limit, they must be listed separately on the label. The specific allergens and their content can be found in the product documentation.
