Product description

Blue glass lets through less light than clear glass, which limits the effect of light on essential oils, facial oils and other light-sensitive contents. The 50 ml glass medicine bottle comes as a ready-made set with a long plastic dropper insert and a white ribbed tamper-evident cap, so you only need to fill it, press the dropper insert into the neck and screw on the cap.

The set is intended for liquid cosmetic preparations that are dispensed by the drop: essential oil blends, massage and facial oils, oil serums, tinctures or alcohol extracts. All three components are declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. The set is not approved for contact with food, so we do not recommend it for homemade syrups or edible oils.

How the set works

  • Bottle – blue glass with an 18/410 neck limits the amount of light reaching the contents and does not react with oils or alcohol. Glass does not let fragrance components through, so the scent of essential oils is not lost through the wall of the bottle.
  • Dropper insert – a clear polypropylene insert that you press into the neck after filling. The contents come out drop by drop when you tilt the bottle, and the dropper insert is not pulled out during dispensing. The long version reaches deeper into the neck.
  • Tamper-evident cap – a white ribbed cap with an 18/410 thread. The tamper-evident ring breaks away when the cap is unscrewed for the first time, so the customer can see that nobody has opened the packaging before. The ribbing makes the cap easier to open even with oily fingers.

What it is suitable for

Dispensing by the drop works well where you use the contents in small amounts. An essential oil blend for a diffuser or soap base can be dropped straight from the bottle, without decanting. A facial oil or cuticle oil is dispensed onto a finger or directly onto the skin. Tinctures and alcohol extracts for cosmetic use are another common filling, as alcohol does not react with glass.

The dripping speed depends on the viscosity of the contents. Thin liquids such as alcohol or hydrosol blends flow quickly, while thick oils such as castor oil or rich oil serums drip slowly. For viscous, water-based and emulsion products, packaging with a pump or a glass dropper is more suitable.

Filling and volume

The nominal volume of 50 ml is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The brimful volume given in the parameters is the physical volume up to the top of the neck. The difference between them is a reserve for the dropper insert, which extends into the neck, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill up to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

Fill the bottle before you press in the dropper insert. If you insert it while you are still filling, the contents get into it with difficulty and form air bubbles. Press the dropper insert in only after filling, with even pressure around the whole circumference, until it sits on the neck.

Before the first filling, we recommend washing the bottle and the dropper insert, disinfecting them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and letting them dry completely. Residual water in an oil-based preparation shortens how long it stays usable.

Good to know

Do not fill the glass with hot contents. A sudden temperature difference can damage the bottle, so fill it only after the contents have cooled to room temperature.

The dropper insert is made of polypropylene, which withstands common cosmetic oils well. For undiluted essential oils and their concentrated blends, we recommend checking how the dropper insert behaves over time, for example on a single piece before filling larger quantities.

The glass bottle can be reused. The dropper insert is harder to clean once pulled out, and after the tamper-evident ring has separated, the cap no longer signals that the packaging is intact, so for further filling we recommend replacing at least the dropper insert. You will find closures with the same neck type and ready-made combinations in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, check the tightness, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

After use, the glass goes into glass waste, while the dropper insert and the cap belong with plastics. Separate the components before disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 50 ml blue glass bottle protect essential oils from light?
Blue glass lets through less light than clear glass, so it protects light-sensitive essential and facial oils better. No coloured glass gives complete protection from light, so it is best to store the bottle out of direct sunlight. For contents that spoil quickly in light, blue glass is a better choice than a clear bottle.
How much can you actually pour into the 50 ml glass bottle with a dropper insert?
Fill it up to the nominal volume of 50 ml, not to the brim. The remaining space up to the neck is taken up by the dropper insert, which extends inside, and it also serves as a reserve for the expansion of the contents in warm conditions. If you overfill the bottle, the contents overflow when you press in the dropper insert and the outside of the packaging gets greasy.
Can the dropper insert be pulled out again after it has been inserted?
It can, but it is difficult and the dropper insert may be damaged in the process. The long version sits firmly in the neck so that it does not come loose during normal use. To pull it out, carefully lever it up with a thin tool at the edge of the neck. For repeated filling, we recommend using a new dropper insert instead.
Is the glass bottle with a dropper insert suitable for tinctures and alcohol extracts?
Yes, glass does not react with alcohol and dispensing tinctures by the drop is common practice. The polypropylene dropper insert tolerates alcohol, but with high-percentage ethanol we recommend checking whether its shape or clarity changes over time. The bottle with a dropper insert is not intended for edible tinctures, as the set is declared for cosmetics only.
What does a tamper-evident cap mean on an 18/410 bottle?
A tamper-evident cap has a ring around its circumference that separates from the cap when it is unscrewed for the first time. The customer can therefore see straight away whether the product has been opened. After the ring has separated, the cap still seals and screws on, but it no longer signals that the packaging is intact. When selling your own products, it is a simple way to show that nobody has opened the contents.
