Product description

This white glass medicine bottle, 30 ml, with a plastic dropper insert and a white ribbed safety cap, is used for dispensing liquids drop by drop. The opaque white glass does not let light through, so the contents stay protected from its effects even without additional packaging. The set is suitable above all for essential oils and their blends, fragrance oils, facial oils, tinctures and oil serums, that is, for contents that are used in small amounts and where precise dispensing matters.

All three components are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The packaging does not have a food-contact certificate, so as a whole it is intended for cosmetic and similar non-food use.

What the set is suitable for

  • Essential oils and blends for an aroma lamp or diffuser – the dropper insert dispenses drop by drop, so it is easy to keep to the number of drops in the recipe.
  • Facial oils and oil serums – a volume of 30 ml corresponds to several weeks of use of a facial oil, and the opaque glass protects delicate oils from light.
  • Tinctures and alcohol extracts – the dropper insert allows the dose to be measured precisely.
  • Fragrance oils and concentrates – small amounts that are added drop by drop to soap, candles or cosmetics.
  • Samples and test batches – the small volume is suitable for trial versions of recipes before making a larger quantity.

How to use the set

After the bottle is filled, the dropper insert is pressed into the neck and stays in it permanently. The contents are dispensed by tilting the bottle, or by tapping it lightly, and they flow out in individual drops. Unlike glass droppers with a rubber bulb, the liquid is not drawn up; it is dispensed directly from the bottle. With essential oils, where you work with a few drops at a time, this is more convenient.

The ribbed surface of the cap makes it easier to grip, even with oily fingers. The cap has an 18/410 thread, matching the neck finish of the bottle.

For concentrated essential oils and blends with a high proportion of terpenes, we recommend checking how the plastic dropper insert behaves with the particular blend over several weeks before filling larger quantities. The glass itself is resistant to these substances.

Volume and filling

The nominal volume of 30 ml is the volume the bottle is designed for with normal filling. The brimful volume is the physical volume up to the top of the neck and is somewhat larger. The difference provides room for the dropper insert, which takes up part of the neck once pressed in, and space for the contents to expand when the temperature changes. For this reason the bottle is filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. An overfilled bottle overflows when the dropper insert is pressed in, and the contents run into the thread, where they then prevent the cap from being tightened properly.

After filling, it is worth wiping the neck and thread dry, especially with oils. Oil residue in the thread will in time glue the cap on and make it harder to open.

Good to know

Before the first filling, the bottle is washed, disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and left to dry completely. The dropper insert and the cap are treated in the same way. Residual water would cause cloudiness in oil-based contents and, in unpreserved water-based contents, a risk of microbial contamination.

The bottle can be reused. The glass withstands washing in hot water and disinfection with alcohol. Once removed from the neck, the dropper insert usually no longer holds as firmly as when it was first fitted, so we recommend a new dropper insert for each new filling. The safety cap is cleaned as usual; the safety mechanism does not need to be taken apart.

Glass does not tolerate sudden changes in temperature. A filled bottle should not be moved from the fridge straight into hot water or the other way round. Heating the contents in the bottle is not recommended, because the contents expand when heated and the plastic dropper insert may be pushed out of the neck.

With water-based contents, for example toners or hydrosols, the set works, but dispensing drop by drop is less practical. For these products, sprayers or pumps are chosen more often.

Closures with the same neck type and other ready-made combinations of medicine bottles with closures can be found in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your particular formulation.

The glass belongs in glass recycling; the dropper insert and the cap are plastic and are sorted separately with plastics.

Frequently asked questions

Does a white glass medicine bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, white glass is opaque and does not let light through. However, the level and colour of the contents cannot be seen through the wall. For essential oils, facial oils and other light-sensitive ingredients this is an advantage; the amount of contents remaining is estimated by weight or when the bottle is opened.
Can the dropper insert be removed from the medicine bottle and used again?
It can be removed, but when it is pressed in again it usually no longer holds as firmly in the neck. The dropper insert is designed to be fitted once, after filling. If you reuse the bottle, we recommend cleaning and disinfecting it and fitting a new dropper insert, so that the dispensing stays precise and the packaging stays tight.
Is a medicine bottle with a dropper insert suitable for essential oils?
Yes, the set is commonly used for essential oils and their blends. Glass does not react with essential oils, and the opaque wall protects them from light. The dropper insert is made of PP plastic; for concentrated blends with a high proportion of terpenes, we recommend checking how it behaves with the particular blend before filling a larger number of bottles.
How much actually fits into a 30 ml medicine bottle?
The bottle is filled to the nominal volume of 30 ml, not to the brim. The brimful volume is larger, and you will find the exact value in the packaging parameters. The difference provides room for the dropper insert pressed into the neck and for the contents to expand when the temperature changes. If the bottle is filled to the brim, the contents are pushed into the thread when the dropper insert is fitted.
Can I fill this medicine bottle with homemade oils or syrups?
No, the set does not have a food-contact certificate, and food use is not stated for it. The bottle, the dropper insert and the cap are not declared for this purpose. The packaging is intended for cosmetic products, essential oils, tinctures and similar non-food contents, for which its suitability for contact with cosmetics has been confirmed.
