Product description

Coenzyme Q10 in powder form is an antioxidant active ingredient soluble in oil, intended for face creams, serums, oils and eye area preparations. In a formulation it serves two roles at once: it acts as an antioxidant in the oil phase and on the skin, where it is used primarily in care for mature skin. It is produced by fermentation, has a purity of 98% and meets the requirements of pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food-grade quality. The raw material is COSMOS Approved certified and contains no allergenic fragrance substances.

It is used primarily in leave-on preparations, where it remains on the skin longer and has time to act. The effective amount is small, typically from 0.05 to 1%, so even a single package is sufficient for a large number of doses.

Key benefits

  • Antioxidant for the skin – helps neutralise free radicals and in leave-on preparations supports skin protection.
  • Antioxidant in the formulation – in oils, butters and emulsions it is incorporated into the oil phase, where it slows its oxidation.
  • Low dosage – the effect is achieved from hundredths of a percent, which conserves the raw material and does not burden the formulation.
  • Wide application – suitable for the face, eye area, body, hands, hair and scalp, for all skin types including sensitive.
  • Purity and origin – biotechnological production by fermentation, free from GMO, palm oil, silicones, PEG and preservatives.

Use in formulation

The powder is insoluble in water, but dissolves in oils. It is therefore incorporated into the emulsion in the oil phase or added during the cooling phase, pre-dissolved in a portion of oil. The melting point lies between 46 and 55 °C, but the recommended processing temperature is below 50 °C. Prolonged heating above this threshold is detrimental to the ingredient.

Weigh out the required amount, mix it with a portion of oil from the recipe, heat to below 50 °C and stir until the powder dissolves. Then add the orange solution to the emulsion during cooling or directly to an anhydrous base.

Dosage ranges between 0.05 – 1% of the total product weight. The recommended pH of the finished product is 6.5 – 7.0, and the ingredient also tolerates acidic conditions.

Coenzyme Q10 is sensitive to light, heat and oxygen. During production it is recommended to work quickly, not to leave the oil solution standing in light for long, and to fill the finished product into opaque or dark packaging.

The powder is yellow to deep orange and at dosages near the upper limit may give a white emulsion a yellowish tint. For light-coloured creams and serums, test the colour on a small sample and adjust the dosage if necessary.

Suitable for products such as

  • Face creams and serums – leave-on preparations for mature, dry and normal skin, where the ingredient has time to act on the skin.
  • Eye creams and gel-creams – for eye area preparations, a low dosage is sufficient.
  • Oil serums and balms – anhydrous systems are the simplest route for an oil-soluble active ingredient, and Coenzyme Q10 also protects the oil base itself within them.
  • Body lotions and hand creams – supplementing antioxidant protection for skin exposed to external influences.
  • Hair care – leave-on serums and oils for ends, preparations for the scalp.
  • Decorative cosmetics – colour preparations with an oil or wax phase into which the ingredient is incorporated.

Good to know

The powder has a fine crystalline structure, yet it should not be poured directly into a finished emulsion. In an aqueous environment it would remain undissolved, which is why it is always dissolved in oil first.

In aqueous gel systems without oil the ingredient will not dissolve and the product will be cloudy or grainy. Such formulations require at least a small proportion of an oil phase into which Coenzyme Q10 can be pre-dissolved.

The ingredient is of both cosmetic and food-grade quality, but in the Handymade range it is intended for cosmetic use only. It contains no materials of animal origin, no nanomaterials or ionising radiation are used in its production, and it is not tested on animals.

Frequently asked questions

Is Coenzyme Q10 soluble in water?
No, Coenzyme Q10 does not dissolve in water; it dissolves in oils. In emulsions it is therefore added to the oil phase or during the cooling phase, always pre-dissolved in a portion of oil. It is not suitable for purely aqueous gels and tonics without an oil component.
How is Coenzyme Q10 added to a cream?
The powder is first dissolved in a small portion of oil from the recipe heated to below 50 °C, and the finished solution is added to the emulsion during cooling. The processing temperature should not exceed 50 °C to preserve the ingredient's efficacy. Dosage is typically 0.05 – 1% of the total product weight.
Will Coenzyme Q10 colour the finished product?
Yes, at higher dosages Coenzyme Q10 may give the product a yellowish to orange tint. The powder is yellow to deep orange and the hue is noticeable in a white emulsion especially at dosages near 1%. At low dosages the colouration is faint; it is advisable to check it on a small sample.
Is Coenzyme Q10 suitable for anhydrous products such as oil serums and balms?
Yes, anhydrous oil serums and balms are well suited for Coenzyme Q10. The ingredient dissolves in oil with gentle heating and in the finished product acts as an antioxidant for the oil base. It is recommended to fill into dark or opaque packaging, as the ingredient is sensitive to light.
What amount of Coenzyme Q10 is suitable for cosmetics?
The recommended dosage of Coenzyme Q10 is 0.05 – 1% of the total formulation weight. The effect is achieved from hundredths of a percent; higher dosages increase the colouration of the product. For light-coloured preparations a test sample is therefore recommended.
Is Coenzyme Q10 suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, Coenzyme Q10 is suitable for sensitive skin as well as for all other skin types. The raw material contains no known skin allergens or fragrance allergens and is not classified as a hazardous substance. As with any active ingredient, it is recommended to test the finished product on a small area of skin.
