Product description

Blue-green French cosmetic clay is a natural mineral blend of clay components.. It comes from French deposits, where the raw material is obtained by mining, then mechanically cleaned, dried and milled into a fine powder suitable for cosmetic use.
Thanks to the combination of montmorillonite and illite, the clay has a more pronounced ability to bind excess sebum and impurities and in products leaves the skin cleaner and mattified. It is often used in the care of normal to oilier skin, in cleansing masks, body and hair wraps, as well as in powder blends.

Key benefits

  • Mattifying effect – helps reduce shine and visually unify the appearance of the skin.
  • Absorbs excess sebum and contributes to a feeling of fresh, clean skin.
  • Binds impurities – suitable for cleansing masks and wraps.
  • Improves texture – provides a velvety, “drier” finish in powder and anhydrous products.
  • Supports a smooth appearance in powders and dry mixtures.

Suitable for products such as

  • Facial masks – cleansing and mattifying, especially for normal to oilier skin.
  • Cleansing powders..
  • Body and hair wraps (powder blends to be mixed with liquid).
  • Deodorants and body powders – moisture absorption and improved skin feel.
  • Soaps – adjustment of sensorial properties and slip (depending on the formulation).

Use in formulation

  • Insoluble in: water and oils – used as a powder dispersion/suspension.
  • Miscible with: aqueous phases (forms a paste), hydrosols and gels; in anhydrous products as a powder component.
  • Compatible with: emulsions, surfactants, oils and butters (as a powder phase); for a more pleasant feel in masks it is often combined with humectants (e.g. glycerin).
  • Technological tip: sift the powder and add it gradually; for a smooth texture first disperse it in a small amount of liquid to a slurry and only then add the remainder.

Safety and storage

  • Avoid inhalation of fine dust; when working with the powder, work slowly and in a well-ventilated area.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; in case of contact, rinse with water.
  • Store in a dry place and in a tightly closed container so that the raw material does not bind moisture and odours from the surroundings.
  • For sensitive skin, choose a shorter mask contact time and follow with hydration.

Composition

  • Montmorillonite (typically approximately 55 % ± 3)
  • Illite (typically approximately 45 % ± 3)

Physical properties

  • Appearance: fine powder with a blue-green hue (natural mineral colouring).
  • Character: absorbent; in contact with water it forms a paste and can increase viscosity.
  • Behaviour in formulations: in low-viscosity systems it may sediment over time – adequate thickening helps.

FAQ

For which skin type is blue-green French clay most suitable?

It is most often used for normal to oilier skin, because it has a more pronounced mattifying and cleansing effect. For dry or sensitive skin, a lower dosage and a shorter application time are suitable.

Why does a clay mask sometimes leave a feeling of tightness?

Clay binds sebum and water from the surface of the skin. If the mask dries completely or is too concentrated, it can have an astringent effect. A shorter application time and a formulation with humectants help.

How to prepare a smooth mask without lumps?

Sift the powder and first mix it into a smooth paste in a small amount of liquid. Only then add the rest of the hydrosol or water and mix to the desired consistency.

Can clay affect the colour of an emulsion or soap?

Yes, the natural mineral colouring can tint the finished product. For colour-sensitive formulations it is advisable to perform a test on a small batch.

Can blue-green clay also be used in a deodorant?

Yes, as a powder component it can contribute to moisture absorption and a drier feel. It is recommended to also test any possible impact on the shade of the product and any potential colour transfer depending on the type of formulation.
