Product description

Kaolin is a fine natural clay composed mainly of the mineral kaolinite (hydrated aluminum silicate). It is formed by long-term weathering and transformation of feldspar-rich rocks, then mined, purified, sorted by particle size and, for cosmetic use, processed into a very fine powder with stable quality.
In cosmetics it is used as an absorbent and mattifying ingredient that binds excess sebum and impurities and improves the sensorial feel of products. Compared to some “heavier” clays, kaolin is often perceived as milder, which is why it is popular even in masks for more sensitive or drier skin, where dosage and contact time are set carefully.

Key benefits

  • Absorbs excess sebum and helps mattify the appearance of the skin.
  • Gentle cleansing and “detox” effect in masks and wash-off products.
  • Improves texture – gives a velvety, smooth finish and reduces tackiness of some formulations.
  • Supports coverage and adhesion in colour cosmetics and powders.
  • Stable mineral powder – also suitable for anhydrous products.

Suitable for products such as

  • Face masks (clay, cleansing, mattifying).
  • Ubtan and dry cleansing powders, exfoliating blends.
  • Soaps (cold process) – improving slip and a velvety skin feel.
  • Deodorants and dry powders – moisture absorption and improved skin feel.
  • Mineral powders, make-up, eye shadows – filler and improved adhesion.

Use in formulation

  • Insoluble in: water and oils – used as a fine dispersion/suspension.
  • Miscible with: aqueous and oil systems (as a powder phase); in emulsions and gels you need to account for increased viscosity and possible sedimentation at low viscosity.
  • Compatible with: common emulsifiers, oils, butters, surfactants and powder ingredients (starches, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide); the outcome is influenced by particle size and dosage.
  • Dosage (indicative):
    • Masks: typically medium to higher percentages depending on mask type and desired consistency.
    • Soaps: low to medium percentages to improve slip and the softness of the foam.
    • Deodorants/powder products: according to desired absorption level and sensorial profile.
  • Processing tip: add kaolin gradually under stirring to minimise lumps; in emulsions you can pre-disperse it in part of the glycerin or oil, depending on the type of formula.

Safety and storage

  • Avoid inhalation of fine dust; when working with the powder, work slowly and in a well-ventilated area.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; in case of eye contact, rinse with water.
  • Store in a tightly closed container, in a dry place, so it does not bind moisture and odours from the surroundings.
  • For clay masks, adjust the contact time to the skin type (for sensitive/dry skin, shorter contact time or “do not let it dry completely” according to the formula concept).

FAQ

Why is kaolin often recommended for more sensitive skin compared to other clays?

Kaolin is often perceived as milder and less “tightening” than some highly absorbent clays. However, the effect still depends on dosage, contact time and the composition of the mask.

How to prevent lumps when mixing kaolin into a formula?

It helps to sieve the kaolin, add it gradually and pre-disperse it in part of the glycerin or oil. In aqueous systems it is important to sprinkle it slowly into the vortex and not to overdo high shear speeds that unnecessarily incorporate air.

Can I use kaolin in a clear gel?

Kaolin is insoluble, so it will cloud a clear gel. If you want to maintain clarity, it is better to choose soluble actives or transparent polymers without powder fillers.

Why is kaolin added to soap?

In soaps it can improve slip during shaving or washing and contribute to a more velvety feel of the lather. At the same time, it slightly adsorbs sebum, which can be desirable for oilier skin.

How to set up a clay mask so that it is not too drying?

It helps to add humectants (e.g. glycerin), soothing ingredients and not let the mask dry completely “bone dry”. A shorter contact time and subsequent hydration of the skin are also important.
