Product description
Coconut wax EcoCoco is a vegetable wax designed for making container candles, that is, candles poured directly into glass, ceramic or a tin, where they also burn. The base consists of coconut wax and coconut oil, supplemented with hydrogenated vegetable fats, which give the mass its firmness so that the candle keeps its shape in the container at room temperature. It is sold by the kilogram and is used in the same way as other container waxes: melt it, add fragrance, colour it if required and pour it into a prepared container with a wick.
Container waxes do not need to stand on their own, as the container provides the support. During burning, the mass melts into an even pool reaching all the way to the walls, which is desirable for a candle in a container.
What it is suitable for
- Candles in glass – glass tumblers and jars, in which the wax remains directly visible once set.
- Candles in tins and ceramics – the wax follows the shape of the container and requires no mould or unmoulding.
- Scented candles – fragrance oils dissolve in the oil-based mass and combine with the wax without any additional ingredients.
- Gift and decorative candles – a vegetable base without paraffin, which customers often look for in handmade candles.
How to work with the wax
Melt the wax in a water bath or in a wax melting pot with temperature control, never over a direct flame. Once melted, add fragrance oil or an oil-soluble dye to the mass, stir the mixture and pour it into a container in which a wick with a sustainer is already fixed. During setting, the wick is held in the centre with a wick holder or clip. Check the pouring temperature on a test candle and adjust it according to how the mass sets and adheres to the walls of the container.
Before a larger batch, always make one test candle with the chosen wick, container and fragrance. The diameter of the container and the thickness of the wick determine whether the pool melts evenly all the way to the walls.
The usage rate of the fragrance oil follows the fragrance manufacturer’s recommendation, and the maximum amount that the mass can hold without sweating on the surface is verified on a test candle. Before the first lighting, leave the finished candle to rest for several days so that the fragrance can bind with the wax.
Good to know
The wax is oil-soluble and water-insoluble. Therefore, only fragrance oils and dyes intended for candles, that is, oil-based or wax-based dyes, belong in the mass. Water-dilutable dyes, hydrosols and alcohol tinctures do not combine with melted wax, and drops of water in the mass would spit during burning.
The vegetable fats in the composition are hardened by hydrogenation. This process turns liquid vegetable oils into fats that are solid at ordinary temperature, and thanks to them the blend with coconut oil keeps its shape in the container.
This wax is intended for burning in a container. For pillar candles, moulded candles or tealights, choose a wax developed for free-standing burning.
In larger containers, a dip may appear around the wick after setting. It helps to set aside part of the melted wax and top up the candle once the first layer has set. Wax left over after working can be melted again and reused, provided no water has got into it.
