Product description

Essential Oil Bergamot

Bergamot essential oil gives products a fresh citrus scent and is also effective in care for oily and problem-prone skin as well as the scalp. It is obtained by cold pressing from the peel of bergamot fruits (Citrus bergamia) of European origin, without heat or chemicals, resulting in a pure unrefined oil. In a formulation it serves as a fragrance ingredient and its amount is governed by IFRA standards for the specific product type.

It is added to facial oils, serums, creams and tonics, to shampoos and hair oils, and also to blends for diffusers and aromatherapy. The manufacturer also states cleansing, antimicrobial and cooling effects on the skin, which makes it suitable for formulations for skin prone to blemishes.

Key benefits

  • Fragrance – fresh citrus, described by the manufacturer as invigorating and refreshing.
  • Cleansing – according to the manufacturer's data, it helps remove impurities and excess sebum from the skin and hair and keeps pores clear.
  • Antimicrobial action – the manufacturer states the ability to inhibit unwanted microorganisms on the skin and promote a clear complexion.
  • Skin calming – the manufacturer describes an anti-inflammatory effect and reduction of redness in irritated skin.
  • Brightening – according to the manufacturer, it helps even out skin tone and reduces the visibility of dark spots.
  • Cooling sensation – leaves a refreshing feeling on the skin; the manufacturer recommends it for products to soothe skin after sun exposure.
  • Scalp – according to the manufacturer, it can help balance sebum production on the scalp and reduce its irritation.

Use in formulation

The oil is soluble in oils and in alcohol, it does not dissolve in water. In anhydrous oil products it is sufficient to mix it in directly. It is added to emulsions in the cooling phase; in water-based products such as tonics or facial mists it is incorporated via a solubiliser. According to the technical data it is compatible with non-ionic surfactants, which simplifies this process. The recommended pH range of the finished product is 5 – 8.

Add it in the cooling phase, when the mixture is below 40 °C. The oil is a mixture of volatile compounds and at higher temperatures part of the fragrance will be lost.

The dosage is not defined by a single number. The maximum amount depends on the IFRA category to which the finished product belongs. A different limit applies to a facial cream, another to a shampoo, and another to lip products or deodorants. Therefore, before finalising a formula, verify the limit for your category in the IFRA certificate for this product.

The oil has a yellow-green to brownish colour. In light or clear transparent products, check in a test batch whether the chosen dosage affects the colour.

Suitable for products such as

  • Facial oils and serums for oily and problem-prone skin – it fully dissolves in an oil base and the cleansing and cooling effects come into play.
  • Facial creams and lotions – as a fragrance ingredient added in the cooling phase.
  • Tonics and facial mists – with a solubiliser so that the oil disperses evenly in the water phase.
  • Shampoos and rinse-off hair products – it is compatible with non-ionic surfactants and acts on the scalp.
  • Hair oils and leave-on scalp products – within the IFRA limit for leave-on products.
  • Diffuser blends and aromatherapy – on its own or in combination with other essential oils.
