Product description
EcoSoya CB-Advanced soy wax is a plant-based wax developed for making container candles, that is, candles poured directly into glass, ceramic, or tin containers in which they also burn. The wax does not need to hold its own shape, so it is used to fill glass jars, tumblers, and tins.
The manufacturer produces it from raw materials with a fully traceable refining history. The wax contains no residual solvents and the manufacturer does not test it on animals. Fragrance oil and candle dye are added to the melted wax. Burn quality is ultimately determined by the correct choice of wick, so every new combination of container, fragrance, and wick goes through test burning.
Key properties
- Designed for container candles – the formula is made for wax that sets and burns inside a container. The manufacturer does not specify use for freestanding candles.
- Plant-based – the base is soy.
- Solidification point around 38 °C – a softer wax, as expected when pouring into containers.
- Low viscosity when melted – approximately 8.5 cSt at 100 °C.
- Off-white colour – an undyed candle has a natural light shade.
- Oil-soluble, water-insoluble – fragrance oils dissolve in the melted wax; water-based solutions and hydrolates do not belong in it.
Working with the wax
The wax is melted in a double boiler or a wax melter with occasional stirring. Dye and fragrance oil are mixed into the melted wax, the mixture is poured into containers with a wick secured by a tab, and the candles are left to cool.
The technical datasheet does not state exact melting and pouring temperatures or fragrance oil dosage. Working conditions are therefore set on a small test batch. Fragrance dosage is based on the recommendation of the specific fragrance oil manufacturer and the result is verified through test burning.
Pour several samples with different wicks at once. After test burning you choose the one where the melt pool has the desired diameter and the flame burns cleanly.
Test burning
Every combination of container size, wax, dye, fragrance, and wick is tested separately. After pouring, the candle is left to cool for at least 48 hours before it is lit. The diameter of the melt pool is observed, as well as whether a mushroom (mushrooming) forms at the end of the wick – a deposit of carbon and other substances that impairs burning and can cause smoking and an unpleasant smell. If the melt pool does not reach the desired diameter or the flame does not burn cleanly, a different wick is tried.
Small air bubbles around the wick during burning are normal for this wax and are not considered a defect.
Do not perform test burning on a freshly poured candle. The manufacturer states a minimum of 48 hours of cooling; otherwise the result does not reflect the behaviour of the finished candle.
What is good to know
- The wax is not classified as hazardous under the CLP Regulation; a safety data sheet is not required for it.
- The manufacturer strives to use non-genetically modified soy. Due to the prevalence of GM soy on the market, however, this cannot be fully guaranteed.
- The technical datasheet lists only use for container candles. Other products, such as wax melts for aroma lamps, are not mentioned by the manufacturer.
