Product description
Clove essential oil gives a formulation a distinctive warm, spicy fragrance with a woody undertone. It is obtained by steam distillation of the flower buds of the clove tree, and the raw material is of Asian origin. In a formulation it works primarily as a fragrance component. The manufacturer also states antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and stimulating effects, which is why it is used in soaps, bath products, massage oils, hair cosmetics, candles and aromatherapy.
The oil is of cosmetic and food grade and is vegan. In facial cosmetics it is mainly intended for products for oily and problem skin, where its cleansing action is combined with its characteristic fragrance.
Key properties
- Distinctive spicy fragrance – warm and spicy, with a woody undertone. Even a small amount adds depth to a fragrance blend.
- Antimicrobial action – according to the manufacturer, it helps to cleanse the skin and scalp. It is therefore recommended for products for oily and problem skin and for shampoos and scalp treatments.
- Anti-inflammatory and soothing properties – the manufacturer states that the oil helps to ease redness and irritation of the skin. This information comes from the supplier’s documentation and does not guarantee the effect of the finished product.
- Warming and stimulating feel – according to the manufacturer, it creates a sensation of warmth and improved circulation on the skin and scalp, which is used in massage oils and hair cosmetics. In products for soothing the skin, the manufacturer describes a cooling, refreshing feel instead.
- Characteristic components – according to the manufacturer, the fragrance and functional properties of the oil come mainly from eugenol and caryophyllene.
Use in formulations
Like any essential oil, clove essential oil dissolves in oils and in alcohol, but not in water. In emulsions it is added to the oil phase or to the finished, cooled emulsion. In toners, hydrosol sprays and bath water it needs a solubiliser, otherwise it will float on the surface. In anhydrous products such as massage and body oils, balms, bath salts and bath bombs, it is enough to mix the oil into the carrier oil or blend it with the salt.
Volatile fragrance components escape when heated, so add it to creams and balms during the cooling phase, stirring continuously. In candles, it is added to the melted wax just before pouring, following the procedure for the given wax blend. Container candles and tealights both fall under IFRA category 12.
The oil is classified as an irritant with sensitising potential and contains fragrance allergens under Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. Never apply it to the skin undiluted. The maximum usage rate is set by the IFRA standard for the specific product category, and allergens above the stated limit must be listed in the ingredients of the finished product.
You will find the usage rates for individual categories, for example 4 for perfumes, 5A for body creams and oils, 5B for facial creams and toners, 9 for soaps and shampoos and 6 for the oral cavity, in the IFRA certificate for the product. Limits differ between categories, so check them for your specific type of product. In leave-on facial cosmetics, include it in a small proportion as part of a fragrance composition.
Suitable for products such as
- Soaps and shower gels – rinse-off products in which the spicy fragrance works both on its own and in a blend with other essential oils.
- Bath salts and bath bombs – blended with salt, in a carrier oil or with a solubiliser, for a warming feel in the bath.
- Massage and body oils – for a sensation of warmth, at the usage rate for IFRA category 5A.
- Shampoos and scalp treatments – the manufacturer recommends them for a cleansing and stimulating effect on the scalp.
- Facial products for oily and problem skin – spot gels and cleansing products, at a low usage rate.
- Candles, diffusers and aromatherapy – a warm, spicy fragrance that works well in blends.
- Toothpastes and mouthwashes – within the limits of IFRA category 6.
Good to know
The fragrance of clove is strong, so when creating a fragrance composition, start with a smaller proportion than with other essential oils and add more according to the result.
Before a larger production run, prepare a small test batch and check whether the oil changes the colour or fragrance of the finished product. The oil ranges in shade from pale yellow to light yellowish brown, so at a higher proportion it may show in clear gel or alcohol-based products.
When working with the concentrated oil, protect your hands with gloves and work in a ventilated room.
