Product description
Spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia) yields an essential oil with a fresh herbal scent and a floral undertone. It is added to formulations as a fragrance ingredient and also as an active substance in facial and body care, bath and shower preparations, and diffuser blends. It is obtained by steam distillation of the flowering herb and has a botanical, European origin.
The scent is clean and invigorating, making it suitable wherever a product is meant to refresh: morning shower gels, massage oils, herbal tonics, and room sprays.
Key benefits
- Fresh herbal scent – a floral-herbal character with a clean, penetrating quality that gives the product energy and freshness.
- Cooling sensation on the skin – the manufacturer states a refreshing, cooling effect used in after-sun products and wherever a product is meant to relieve the feeling of overheated skin.
- Soothing irritated skin – according to manufacturer documentation, the oil supports calming of reddened and irritated skin; in cosmetics it is used in after-sun products and body oils.
- Cleansing character – the manufacturer attributes antimicrobial properties to the oil; in a formulation this is a complementary function alongside the fragrance, not a substitute for preservation.
- Aromatherapy – in a diffuser or fragrance blend it evokes a feeling of freshness and focus.
Use in formulation
The essential oil belongs in the oil phase or is added at the end of production. In emulsions it is incorporated only after cooling, so that the volatile fragrance components are not lost through heating. In anhydrous products (body oils, massage oils, balms) it is blended into the oils and butters after they have melted and partially cooled.
The oil does not dissolve in water. For tonics, room sprays, and other aqueous systems it must first be combined with a solubiliser or a small amount of alcohol; otherwise it will separate to the surface and the product will become cloudy. Into bath salts it is mixed dry with the salt, or alternatively with a carrier oil.
Dosing of fragrance ingredients is governed by the IFRA standard for the specific product category (perfumes, body oils, rinse-off products, and candles have different limits). Before including it in a formulation, verify the limit for your category and always dilute the oil — never apply it undiluted.
When composing a fragrance blend, first prepare a small sample and evaluate the scent only after a few days. In emulsions we recommend checking the stability and intensity of the fragrance after a few weeks, as volatile fragrance components may fade in some systems.
Suitable for products such as
- Shower gels and bath preparations – fresh scent with a cooling touch for morning and sports variants.
- Body and massage oils – dissolves directly in carrier oils and lends them a refreshing character.
- After-sun products – the manufacturer lists these as a typical application for cooling and soothing effects.
- Facial care – tonics and light creams where fragrance and a fresh feel are part of the application experience.
- Hair sprays and mists – according to the manufacturer, they leave a fresh herbal scent in the hair.
- Diffusers, fragrance blends, and room sprays – on its own or in combination with other essential oils.
Good to know
The product is subject to the CLP Regulation and carries pictograms for flammability, irritation and sensitisation, serious health hazards, and corrosivity. When working with the undiluted oil, wear gloves, work in a ventilated area, and keep it away from heat sources and open flames. Details on classification and safe handling are contained in the safety data sheet accompanying the product.
The oil may cause skin sensitisation. In leave-on products include it with a margin below the IFRA limit and have the finished product assessed by composition before placing it on the market.
