Product description
A few drops of Wintergreen (Gaultheria) essential oil are enough for its sweet, minty fragrance with a woody undertone to cut through the whole blend. It is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves of the Gaultheria procumbens plant. In cosmetics it serves as a fragrance component and active ingredient; it is added in small amounts and gives the finished product a clean, easily recognisable character.
It is suitable above all for oil-based and anhydrous products, soaps, candles and air fresheners. Because of its intensity, it is used with care and always within the IFRA limits for the given product type.
Fragrance and character
The fragrance is strong, sweet and minty, with a woody undertone. In perfumery classification it is a middle note. Even a few drops cut through the rest of the blend, so when creating fragrance compositions it is added last and the other components are adjusted to it. The oil itself is pale yellow to pinkish yellow.
Use in formulations
The oil is soluble in vegetable oils and in alcohol, and insoluble in water. In massage oils, balms and solid sticks it is mixed directly into the oil phase. In emulsions it is incorporated in the cooling phase, that is, only after the emulsion has formed, or it can be added afterwards to the finished base. Toners, sprays and other water-based products need a solubiliser or an alcohol base, otherwise the oil separates and forms droplets on the surface.
The usage rate is determined by the IFRA limits for the specific product category. They differ depending on whether it is a leave-on product, a rinse-off product, a candle or an air freshener. The maximum concentrations for individual categories are given in the product parameters, and we recommend checking them first when designing a recipe.
The substance is subject to the CLP Regulation and is marked with the GHS07 pictogram (irritant, sensitisation, mild toxicity). Undiluted oil should not be applied to the skin, and when handling it we recommend protecting your eyes and skin. You will find details in the safety data sheet for the product.
Suitable for products such as
- Massage oils and balms – the oil is mixed into a carrier oil or a melted balm base, with the usage rate according to IFRA category 5A.
- Solid and liquid soaps, shower gels – rinse-off products under IFRA category 9, where the fragrance is noticeable even at a low usage rate.
- Candles – they fall under IFRA category 12, and a strong fragrance works well in them.
- Air freshener sprays – the oil dissolves in alcohol, so it can also be used in alcohol-based room sprays (IFRA category 10B).
- Fragrance compositions and perfumes – as a middle note in minty-woody blends, always within the limits for IFRA category 4.
Good to know
The parameters indicate possible sensitisation, so we recommend testing a finished product containing this oil on a small area of skin before regular use. This applies especially to leave-on products, in which the oil stays on the skin for longer.
When creating a new recipe, start well below the upper IFRA limit and adjust the fragrance drop by drop. Wintergreen overpowers the other components, and the usage rate cannot be reduced in a finished batch.
