Fragrances play an important role in natural cosmetics. They are not only a sensory experience, but also active ingredients with therapeutic effects on the skin, hair or psyche. The most well-known aromatic ingredients include essential oils, fragrance oils, CO2 extracts and absolutes. In this article, we'll explain what these terms mean, how they are obtained, where you can use them, and what the differences between them are.
Essential oils are most often obtained by steam distillation of plant parts (flowers, leaves, bark, fresh fruits). These are highly concentrated substances that preserve both the aromatic and therapeutic properties of plants.
Fragrance oils can be either synthetic or a blend of essential oils and aromatic compounds. Their main purpose is to mimic or create a unique fragrance. They do not contain a therapeutic effect like essential oils.
CO2 extracts are produced using carbon dioxide in a supercritical state. This process guarantees very fine and pure extracts, often with better stability and a more complex fragrance than conventional essential oils.
Absolues are created by extracting substances from very sensitive flowers (e.g. jasmine, rose) using solvents. This produces a thick aromatic essence with an intense fragrance, which is not suitable for internal use, but is of strong value in cosmetics.
*CO2-to extracts are total extracts from the plant (obtained by high-pressure extraction), so contain all CO2-soluble components, including waxes, resins, dyes. They are thus very similar to the plant itself, usually thick and pasty just because of the waxes, fats and resins contained, which come from the plant material itself.
- ideal for facial oils, balms, massage blends, aromatherapy, candles and diffusers
- suitable for candles, soaps, waxes, cleaning products.
- high quality ingredients for luxurious cosmetics, especially for serums, creams, special care.
- mainly in perfumes and luxury skin care.
Some plants are too delicate for distillation or their essential oil is not stable. Therefore, only absolutes are made from them:
Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum)
Rose (Rosa centifolia) - mainly in perfumery
Violet (Viola odorata)
Mimosa (Acacia dealbata)
Aromatic ingredients are not only the fragrance component of your products, but also the active ingredient with a real effect on the skin or the senses. When choosing, consider the type of product, the target group and the preferred origin of the ingredients. Fragrances can not only spice up your cosmetics, but also heal.
