Product description

Liquorice CO₂-to extract with MCT oil is a standardized botanical extract obtained from the dried root of Glycyrrhiza uralensis (liquorice) by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction with a small amount of ethanol. The extract is then diluted with coconut MCT oil to a precisely defined content of bioactive substances. It has a brown colour, a viscous consistency and a mild, slightly sweet taste typical of liquorice. Thanks to its content of isoflavanones, it has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and soothing effects, while it does not contain glycyrrhizin – the substance responsible for the characteristic sweetness and potential undesirable effects. It is a CO₂-to (total extract) – a complete extract that contains the full spectrum of lipophilic components of the root, including isoflavanones, coumarins, plant sterols and waxes.

Type of extraction: Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (CO₂) with ethanol
Designation: CO₂-to – total extract (complete extract with all lipid components)
D/E ratio: 13 – 17 kg dried liquorice root per 1 kg extract
Composition: 50 % CO₂ extract from the root of Glycyrrhiza uralensis, 50 % MCT oil (from coconut)
Standardized content: min. 8.5 % isoflavanones (licoricidin and licorisoflavan A), 2 – 4 % ethanol

Key benefits

  • Antibacterial action – inhibits the growth of bacteria in the oral cavity and helps maintain a healthy microflora.

  • Free from glycyrrhizin – does not affect the mineral balance in the body and is gentle on the skin.
  • Effective natural extract – contains isoflavanones with proven antibacterial activity against oral pathogens.
  • Certified organic quality – approved according to NATRUE, ECOCERT and COSMOS standards.

  • Handling: The extract is concentrated – before use, heat to 40 °C and mix well. Not suitable for direct skin contact or internal use.

Cosmetic use

In cosmetics, liquorice CO₂ extract is used mainly for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It contains the isoflavanones licoricidin and licorisoflavan A, which have been shown to suppress the growth of bacteria that cause dental caries, bad breath and gingival inflammation. It is also suitable for the care of irritated, problematic or sensitive skin, where it improves regeneration and reduces inflammation. It is added to toothpastes, mouthwashes, balms, creams and ointments for its naturally soothing and protective effects. Coconut MCT oil acts as a light carrier that improves the application and stability of the extract in the formulation, while enhancing the absorption of the active substances.

Safety and storage

For external use only. Store in a cool, dry and dark place, tightly closed and out of the reach of children. Before use, heat to 40 °C and mix. Do not apply directly to the skin – use only as part of cosmetic formulations.

FAQ

What are the main active substances in the liquorice CO₂ extract?

The extract contains at least 8.5 % isoflavanones – mainly licoricidin and licorisoflavan A, which have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. It does not contain glycyrrhizin, which makes it gentle and safe even for sensitive skin.

What is liquorice most commonly used for in cosmetics?

It is used primarily in oral care and skin care cosmetics – in toothpastes, mouthwashes, balms and creams. It helps to reduce inflammation, has an antibacterial effect and supports skin regeneration.

Does the extract contain glycyrrhizin and why is this important?

No, this extract does not contain glycyrrhizin – a sweet saponin compound that occurs naturally in liquorice roots. Glycyrrhizin has a pronounced sweet taste, but with long-term or high use it can affect the sodium and potassium balance in the body. Its absence in this extract means that the product is gentle, stable and suitable even for sensitive skin and oral hygiene.

What does the designation “CO₂-to” mean?

The abbreviation CO₂-to refers to a total extract – a complete CO₂ extract that includes the full spectrum of plant substances, including isoflavanones, sterols and waxes. This type of extract is more nourishing and more effective than “selective” (CO₂-se) extracts.
