Black French clay is a natural mineral blend of clays and fine mineral particles, used mainly in cleansing and mattifying cosmetics. It is a combination of three types of clay: Illite, Quartz and Kaolin, i.e. a blend of clays with different abilities to absorb sebum and improve product texture. The raw material is formed by geological processes (weathering and sedimentation), then mined, mechanically purified, dried and milled into a fine powder suitable for cosmetic use. The “black” shade is usually given by the natural mineral colouring and trace components in the deposit, not by added colorants. In practice it is a popular choice for masks and powder products where you want a stronger cleansing and mattifying effect than with kaolin alone, while still having a pleasant texture and good spreadability.
Most often it is used for oily and combination skin because it has a more pronounced mattifying and cleansing effect. For dry skin, a lower dosage, shorter contact time and supplementing the mask with humectants is advisable.
Clays bind sebum as well as water from the surface of the skin. If the mask dries out completely or is too concentrated, it can have a tightening effect. A shorter contact time, humectants and subsequent hydration help.
Sieve the powder and add it gradually. It is practical to premix it into glycerin or oil and only then add water/hydrosol. When mixing, do not use unnecessarily high shear so as not to aerate the blend.
Yes, dark clay can change the shade of the finished product (emulsions, soaps, powders). For colour-sensitive products it is advisable to carry out a test on a small batch.
Yes, it can contribute to moisture absorption and a drier feel. At the same time, however, it can slightly tint the product, so it is recommended to also test possible colour transfer to textiles depending on the type of formulation.
