Product description

Blue-green French cosmetic clay is a natural mineral mixture of clay components... It comes from French deposits, where the raw material is extracted by mining, then mechanically cleaned, dried and milled into a fine powder suitable for cosmetic use.
Thanks to the combination of montmorillonite and illite, the clay has a more pronounced ability to bind excess sebum and impurities, leaving the skin cleaner and more mattified in products. It is often used in the care of normal to oilier skin, in cleansing masks, pastimes and powder blends.

Key benefits

  • Mattifying effect - helps to reduce shine and visually unify the appearance of the skin.
  • Absorbs excess sebum and contributes to the feeling of fresh, clear skin.
  • Binds impurities - suitable for cleansing masks and entertainments.
  • Improves texture - adds a velvety, "drier" finish in powder and waterless products.
  • Promotes a smooth appearance in powders and dry blends.

Suitable in products such as

  • Facial masks - cleansing and mattifying, especially for normal to oilier skin.
  • Cleansing powders..
  • Body and hair wraps (powder mixtures for mixing).
  • Deodorants and body powders - absorb moisture and improve skin feel.
  • Soaps - sensory and slip adjustments (by formula).

Use in formulation

  • Insoluble in: water and oils - used as a powder dispersion/suspension.
  • Miscible with: aqueous phases (forms a paste), hydrates and gels; in anhydrous products as a powder component.
  • Compatible with: emulsions, tensides, oils and butters (as powder phase); often combined with humectants (e.g. glycerin) for a more pleasant feel in masks.
  • Technology tip: sift the powder and add gradually; for a smooth texture, first mix in a smaller amount of liquid to make a slurry and then add the rest.

Safety and storage

  • Avoid inhaling fine dust; work slowly and in a well-ventilated area when handling the powder.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; flush with water if touched.
  • Store dry and in tightly closed containers to prevent the raw material from binding moisture and odours from the surrounding area.
  • For sensitive skin, choose a shorter mask duration and moisturise afterwards.

Ingredients

  • Montmorillonite (typically approximately 55 % ± 3)
  • Illite (typically approximately 45 % ± 3)

Physical properties

  • Appearance: fine powder with a blue-green tint (natural mineral colour).
  • Character: absorbent; forms a paste in contact with water and may increase viscosity.
  • Behaviour in formulations: in thin systems it may settle over time - adequate thickening helps.

FAQ

What type of skin is blue-green French clay best suited for?

It is most commonly used for normal to more oily skin, as it has a more pronounced mattifying and cleansing effect. For dry or sensitive skin, a lower dosage and a shorter application time is advisable.

Why does a clay mask sometimes leave a feeling of tightness?

Clay binds both sebum and water from the surface of the skin. If the mask dries out completely or is too concentrated, it can feel astringent. A shorter application time and a formulation with humectants helps.

How to prepare a smooth, lump-free mask?

Sift the powder and first mix it in a small amount of liquid to make a smooth slurry. Only then add the rest of the hydrolat or water and mix to the desired consistency.

Can clay affect the colour of emulsion or soap?

Yes, the natural mineral coloration can tint the finished product. For color sensitive formulas, it is advisable to do a test in a small batch.

Can blue-green clay also be used in deodorant?

Yes, as a powder ingredient it can contribute to moisture absorption and a drier feel. It is also recommended to test the possible effect on the product shade and possible colour transfer according to the type of formulation.
