French Montmorillonite is a natural layered clay from the smectite group, known for its high ability to bind sebum, impurities and ions on its surface. It is formed by geological transformation of volcanic ashes and clayey sediments; after mining, the raw material is purified, graded according to fineness and, for cosmetic use, processed into a fine powder with controlled quality.Compared to kaolin, montmorillonite is usually more strongly absorbent and, in contact with water, can swell more markedly and create a “gel-like” feel. For this reason, it is often used in cleansing and mattifying masks for oilier or problem skin, but for sensitive or dry skin the dosage and exposure time are adjusted carefully.
Montmorillonite is usually significantly more absorbent and can provide a stronger cleansing and mattifying effect. Kaolin is generally gentler. The choice depends on the skin type and the desired result.
When it dries out completely, the mask can act tightening and increase the feeling of dryness. A shorter contact time, light re-moistening during the application or a formulation with humectants helps.
Sifting the powder, adding it gradually and pre-mixing into glycerin or oil helps. When mixing into water, sprinkle it slowly into the vortex and do not overuse high shear, so that the mixture is not unnecessarily aerated.
Yes, it is used as a powder component to improve moisture absorption and provide a drier feel on the skin. It is advisable to combine it with other absorbent powders and adjust the dosage so that the feel is not too “dry”.
Yes, clays can significantly change viscosity and stability, especially in aqueous systems. For a new formula it is advisable to test the dosage and choose appropriate thickening, in order to prevent sedimentation.
