Product description

French Montmorillonite is a natural layered clay of the smectite group, known for its high ability to bind grease, dirt and ions to its surface. It is formed by the geological transformation of volcanic ash and clay sediments; after extraction, the raw material is purified, sorted according to fineness and processed into a fine, quality-controlled powder for cosmetic use.
Compared to kaolin, montmorillonite is usually more strongly absorbent and can swell more strongly in contact with water, producing a 'gel-like' sensation. It is therefore often used in cleansing and mattifying masks for oilier or problematic skin, but for sensitive or dry skin, the dosage and duration of action should be adjusted with care.

Key benefits

  • High sebum absorption - helps to mattify skin and reduce shine.
  • Adsorption of impurities - suitable for cleansing masks and entertainments.
  • Promotes a clean look in pores - leaves skin feeling "cleansed" in masks.
  • Texture enhancement - in powder products, imparts a smoother, softer feel.
  • Natural filler - also suitable for anhydrous products and make-up.

Suitable for products such as

  • Cleansing and mattifying face masks (especially for oily and combination skin).
  • Dry cleansing powders.
  • Deodorants and body powders - moisture absorption and improved skin feel.
  • Powder scrubs (gentle) and body wraps.
  • Soaps - improve slip and sensory (by formulation).

Use in formulation

  • Insoluble in: water and oils - used as a dispersion/suspension.
  • Miscible with: both water and oil systems (as a powder component); may sink to the bottom over time in thinner products, so appropriate thickening system should be used.
  • Compatible with: common oils, butters, emulsifiers and powdered ingredients (starches, zinc oxide); in formulations with acids and salts, it is advisable to test for stability as clays can affect viscosity and feel on the skin.
  • Dosage (indicative)
    • Masks: medium to higher percentages according to the strength of the cleansing effect and skin type.
    • Deodorants and powders: according to desired absorption and softness of feel.
    • Washing powders: as a supporting ingredient for a cleansing and mattifying effect.
  • Technological tip: for a smooth texture, sift and add montmorillonite gradually; for masks, it can be premixed into a portion of glycerine or oil to reduce clumping.

Safety and storage

  • Avoid inhaling fine dust; work slowly and in a well-ventilated area when handling the powder.
  • Avoid contact with eyes; flush with water in case of contact.
  • Store in a tightly closed container, in a dry place, so that it does not bind moisture and odours from the surroundings.
  • For masks, adjust the duration of application to the skin type; for sensitive or dry skin, a shorter application followed by moisturisation is advisable.

FAQ

How does montmorillonite differ from kaolin in face masks?

Montmorillonite tends to be more absorbent and can provide a stronger cleansing and mattifying effect. Kaolin is usually more gentle. The choice depends on your skin type and desired result.

Why is it important not to let a clay mask dry completely?

When completely dry, the mask can feel astringent and increase the feeling of dryness. A shorter application time, light wetting during application or a formulation with humectants can help.

How to achieve a smooth, lump-free mask?

Sifting the powder, gradually adding and premixing it into glycerin or oil helps. When mixing into water, pour slowly into the vortex and do not overdo the high speed so as not to aerate the mixture unnecessarily.

Can montmorillonite also be used in deodorant?

Yes, it is used as a powdered ingredient to improve moisture absorption and for a drier feel on the skin. It is advisable to combine it with other absorbent powders and adjust the dosage so that it does not feel too "dry".

Can montmorillonite affect the viscosity of an emulsion or gel?

Yes, clays can significantly alter viscosity and stability, especially in aqueous systems. It is advisable to test the dosage and choose an appropriate thickening to avoid sedimentation when making a new recipe.
