Product description
The 5 ml glass pharmaceutical bottle with a plastic inner dropper and a white ribbed safety cap is designed for small quantities of liquid cosmetic preparations that are dispensed drop by drop. The clear glass shows the colour and clarity of the contents, so it suits samples, essential oils, fragrance oils and concentrated serums, where customers want to see what they are buying. All three parts of the set are declared suitable for cosmetic contact; the set is not approved for food.
How the set works
- Glass pharmaceutical bottle – the body of the packaging, made of clear glass with an 18/410 neck finish. Glass does not absorb fragrance or colour from the contents and withstands essential oils as well as alcohol-based and oil-based preparations.
- Plastic inner dropper – a long PP insert that is pressed into the neck of the bottle. The contents are released one drop at a time when the bottle is tilted, and cannot be accidentally poured out all at once.
- Safety cap – a white ribbed PE cap that screws onto the neck over the inner dropper. The ribs make it easier to unscrew even with oily fingers, and the safety feature shows whether the packaging has already been opened.
Dispensing through the inner dropper works best with thin and medium-viscosity liquids. A thick oil or gel passes slowly through the insert, so with such a formulation it is worth checking the dripping speed before filling the whole batch.
What it is suitable for
Five millilitres is a typical volume for samples and trial packs: test serums, facial oils in travel size and small packs of fragrance oils. The same volume is also used for essential oil blends for aroma lamps and diffusers, where customers dispense drop by drop straight from the small bottle. The pharmaceutical bottle with an inner dropper also proves useful in the maker’s workshop: for leftover fragrance compositions, colorants dissolved in oil, or concentrates from which only a few drops are added to a recipe.
The set is not designed for water-based toners and sprays. The inner dropper dispenses only in drops; for spray use, a pharmaceutical bottle with a fine mist sprayer is more suitable.
Nominal and total volume
The nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The brim-full capacity is the physical volume up to the neck, and you will find it in the parameters. The difference between them is a reserve for the inner dropper, which is pressed into the neck and takes up part of the space, and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. For this reason, fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If the bottle were full to the brim, the contents would be pushed out when the inner dropper is inserted.
Insert the inner dropper only after filling, and before screwing on the cap check that it sits straight and evenly around the whole circumference. An insert pressed in at an angle does not seal properly, and the contents may leak during transport.
Good to know
Before the first filling, the bottle is washed, disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and left to dry completely. The inner dropper and the cap are treated in the same way. The glass body can be reused after washing. After being removed from the neck, the inner dropper may no longer hold as firmly as when it was first inserted, so for repeated filling it is worth inserting a new one.
Clear glass does not protect the contents from light. In a clear bottle, essential oils, fragrance compositions and serums with light-sensitive ingredients should be stored in a box or out of direct sunlight. For formulations that are meant to stay in the light for longer, amber or blue glass is more suitable.
The inner dropper and the cap are made of plastic. With concentrated essential oils and solvents, we recommend checking how both parts behave with your specific formulation, especially during longer storage.
The set is not approved for food contact. For homemade syrups, cooking oils or herbal infusions, choose packaging that has this declaration in its parameters.
Closures with the same neck finish and other ready-made combinations of pharmaceutical bottle and closure can be found in the Handymade range. If you build your own combination, it is advisable to check the tightness, dispensing and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation. Once empty, the glass is sorted as glass, while the inner dropper and the cap belong with plastics.
