Fragrance oils suitable for lip balms

This category contains fragrance oils that you may also use in lip products. We include only fragrances that IFRA permits in category 1 – which covers lip balms, lip glosses and other products applied to the lips. The deciding factor is the IFRA certificate for the specific fragrance, not how it smells.

Fragrance, not flavouring

These are fragrance compositions. They give the balm a scent, but they contain no sweetener, so they will not sweeten it. You can smell gourmand notes such as vanilla, chocolate or wild berries in the balm, but they will not make it taste sweet.

Usage rate according to IFRA category 1

The maximum amount of fragrance in the finished balm is set by the IFRA category 1 limit. It differs for each fragrance, and you will find it in the IFRA certificate in the Product documentation section. If IFRA sets no category 1 limit for a particular fragrance, a small amount is still enough for the lips – start with a low dose and check the result on a small sample.

  • When to add: stir the fragrance oil into the melted mixture of oils, butters and waxes just before pouring it into containers, once the mixture has cooled slightly. High temperatures cause the volatile components of the fragrance to evaporate.
  • Colour: some fragrances have their own colour and may slightly tint a light-coloured balm.
  • Test: before making a larger batch, make a small sample and let it stand for a day or two so the fragrance can settle in the mixture.

Allergens and labelling of the balm

Fragrance oils contain fragrance allergens as listed in Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. If their content in the finished balm exceeds 0.001%, they are listed in the ingredient list on the packaging. For each fragrance, the Product documentation section includes the IFRA certificate, the allergen declaration and the safety data sheet, so you can label the finished balm correctly.

More fragrances for soaps, candles and body cosmetics are in the Fragrance oils category – for lip products, however, choose only from this category. You will find push-up sticks and tubes in the Lip balm containers section. We are happy to help you choose a fragrance – just write to us at info@handymade.store.

Frequently asked questions

Why does this category not include all fragrance oils?

Only a fragrance that IFRA permits in category 1 may be used in lip products. Many fragrance oils have a category 1 limit of 0% or are not permitted in it at all. We do not include them here, even though they are suitable for soaps or candles.

How much fragrance oil should I put in a lip balm?

At most the amount that IFRA category 1 permits for the particular fragrance. You will find the value in the IFRA certificate in the Product documentation section. A small amount is enough for the lips, so start with a low dose and check the result on a sample.

Will these fragrance oils sweeten the balm?

No. They are fragrance oils, not flavourings, and they contain no sweetener. The balm will be scented, but they will not give it a sweet taste.

Do I have to list the fragrance oil in the balm’s ingredient list?

Yes. The fragrance is listed in the ingredients as Parfum. Fragrance allergens from Annex III of Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 are listed separately if their content in the finished balm exceeds 0.001%. You will find the allergen declaration in the Product documentation section.
