Product description

Macadamia oil, cold pressed in BIO quality is a virgin vegetable oil obtained from the seeds (nuts) of the Macadamia integrifolia tree. It is produced by mechanical cold pressing (LZS), which allows it to retain its natural character - colour, delicate typical aroma and a wide spectrum of naturally present lipids. Organic quality means emphasis on the origin of the raw material and controlled cultivation according to organic production rules.

Macadamia oil is particularly popular for its comfortable "sebum-like" sensory (feeling similar to natural sebum), quick spreadability and smooth finish. In cosmetics, it is used as an emollient - softening, smoothing and helping to reduce the feeling of tightness in dry or stressed skin.

Active ingredients and natural ingredients

  • Fatty acids: a high proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids, including naturally occurring palmitoleic acid (omega-7), which is associated with a pleasant 'skin' feel and smoothness.
  • Antioxidant components: tocopherols and other minor components may be present in virgin oils.
  • Vitamins and minerals listed for macadamia oil: vitamins A, B, E and trace elements (selenium, zinc).
  • Natural SPF: some sources list a low natural SPF of about 3-4; this is not a substitute for sunscreen and always use a proven SPF product when in the sun.

Key benefits

  • Softens and smooths skin - improves slip, spreadability and "satin" finish.
  • Helps reduce dryness and tightness - creates a gentle protective lipid film.
  • Comfortable even for mature and stressed skin - a favourite for anti-age and regenerative formulas.
  • Also excellent in hair care - smooths lengths and ends without a noticeably heavy greasy feel (when dosed correctly).
  • Ideal for massage blends - provides good slip and a nice touch.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial oils and oil serums (also as a 'base' for blends)
  • body oils, massage oils, shower oils
  • creams, body lotions, emulsions (as part of the oil phase)
  • lip balms, protective balms and sticks
  • hair products: wrap oils, tip serum, rinse-free emulsions
  • products for sensitive skin (in gentle, unscented formulas)

Use in formulation

  • Recommended dosage: commonly used approximately 1-10% in emulsions and 5-100% in oil products, depending on target texture.
  • Miscible with most vegetable oils and butters; suitable for blending with lighter oils and drier emollients.
  • Insoluble in water - belongs to the oil phase; in aqueous products only via a suitable emulsifier or solubilization.
  • Recommended to add during cooling (below 40 °C) - especially in emulsions and products with heat sensitive ingredients.
  • Tip for the stability of oil products: consider adding an antioxidant (e.g. vitamin E) to oil serums.

Safety and storage

  • For external use only; avoid direct contact with eyes.
  • We recommend a tolerance test on a small area of skin before first use.
  • For persons with increased sensitivity to nuts, extra caution is advised.
  • Store well sealed, in a dry and dark place, out of direct sunlight and heat sources.

FAQ - frequently asked questions

Is the "organic quality" of macadamia oil also important in cosmetics?

Organic quality usually means an emphasis on the origin of the raw material and the rules of organic cultivation. In cosmetics, customers often seek this out because of the philosophy of "cleaner" inputs and sustainability, not because BIO automatically changes the sensory or color of the oil in every batch.

Can I use macadamia oil as a substitute for sunscreen?

No. Although some vegetable oils mention a low natural "protection factor", this is not tested and regulated UV protection. When out in the sun, always use a proven SPF product with established protection.

How to minimize oxidation of virgin oil in oil serum?

Dark packaging, limiting air access (pump), storing away from heat, and supplementing with an antioxidant (such as tocopherol or rosemary extract) helps. In recipes, it pays to avoid excessive heating and work cleanly to reduce the risk of spoilage.

Is macadamia oil suitable in formulas for problematic skin?

It depends on the whole formulation and individual tolerance. If you're targeting a light feel, use a lower percentage of oil phase and combine with lighter emollients; for a new product, we recommend testing on a small area and monitoring the skin's reaction.

How does cold-pressed (virgin) macadamia oil differ from refined in the finished product?

Virgin oil typically has a more natural aroma and may have more minor components, while refined tends to be more neutral (less likely to affect the scent and color of the product). The choice depends on whether you want "natural character" or the most neutral raw material.
