Macadamia oil, cold-pressed in organic quality is a virgin vegetable oil obtained from the seeds (nuts) of the tree Macadamia integrifolia. It is produced by mechanical cold pressing (LZS), thanks to which it retains its natural character – colour, delicate typical scent and a wide spectrum of naturally present lipids. Organic quality means an emphasis on the origin of the raw material and controlled cultivation according to the rules of organic production. Macadamia oil is popular especially for its comfortable “sebum-like” sensorial profile (a feel similar to natural skin sebum), quick spreadability and soft finish. In cosmetics it is used as an emollient – it softens, smooths and helps to reduce the feeling of tightness in dry or stressed skin.
Organic quality usually means an emphasis on the origin of the raw material and the rules of organic cultivation. In cosmetics customers often seek this because of the philosophy of “cleaner” inputs and sustainability, not because organic would automatically change the sensorial properties or colour of the oil in every batch.
No. Although a low natural “protection factor” is mentioned for some vegetable oils, this is not a tested and regulated UV protection. When spending time in the sun always use a tested SPF product with a defined protection level.
A dark container, limiting air access (pump dispenser), storing away from heat and adding an antioxidant (e.g. tocopherol or rosemary extract) all help. In formulations it is worthwhile to avoid excessive heating and to work cleanly to reduce the risk of deterioration.
It depends on the entire formulation and individual tolerance. If you are targeting a light skin feel, use a lower percentage of the oil phase and combine it with lighter emollients; for a new product we recommend testing on a small area and observing the skin’s reaction.
Virgin oil typically has a more natural aroma and may contain more minor components, whereas refined oil tends to be more neutral (it influences the product’s fragrance and colour less). The choice depends on whether you want a “natural character” or the most neutral raw material possible.
