Product description

CO2-se hazelnut extract, organic, is a selective CO₂ extract from roasted kernels of Corylus avellana, obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. The designation CO₂-se stands for selective extract, i.e. a selective extract that contains mainly more volatile aromatic substances and a portion of the oil fraction. Compared with CO₂-to extracts, this is not a complete extract with the full spectrum of heavier constituents, waxes and resins, but a milder type of extract, in its nature closer to an aromatic fragrance component. During production, flavour and fragrance components are extracted from finely chopped and freshly roasted hazelnuts together with part of the oil, while the final product contains no solvent residues, no inorganic salts and no reproducible micro-organisms. The extract has the form of a clear yellow liquid oil with a pronounced, naturally nutty-aromatic odour typical of roasted hazelnuts.

In cosmetics, this extract is used primarily as a natural aromatic and conditioning ingredient in oil serums, balms, massage blends, perfume compositions and nourishing skin-care products. Thanks to its characteristic odour profile, it is suitable as an odourising component in fragrance and body formulations, while at the same time providing a lipid contribution to oil-based and anhydrous systems. Since it is an extract from roasted nuts, it is particularly suitable for products where a warm gourmand scent, a natural botanical origin and an interesting sensory profile are desired.

Key benefits

  • Gives formulations a natural roasted hazelnut scent without the need for synthetic fragrance.
  • It is a selective CO₂ extract, rich mainly in aromatic components and part of the oil fraction.
  • Contains no solvent residues, making it suitable for formulations with an emphasis on clean processing.
  • Provides an oily, softening character to both anhydrous and emulsion products.
  • Works very well as a natural odourising component in perfume, balm and body compositions.
  • Suitable for natural and organic cosmetics focused on an authentic botanical profile.

Suitable for products such as

  • oil perfumes and natural perfume compositions
  • lip balms with a gourmand character
  • body and massage oils
  • nourishing facial oils and oil serums
  • body balms and butters
  • creams and emulsions with a warm nutty profile
  • seasonal winter and holiday cosmetic products

Use in formulation

  • Soluble in oils and other lipophilic ingredients.
  • Miscible with vegetable oils, butters, waxes, esters and oil-based perfume compositions.
  • Compatible with anhydrous balms, oil serums and emulsion systems after incorporation into the oil phase.
  • In emulsions it is usually incorporated into the oil phase or into the final phase at a lower temperature, where the formulation allows.
  • It is recommended to add it during cooling (at a temperature below 40 °C).
  • In perfume and flavouring applications it is used at lower dosage so as not to mask the other components of the composition.
  • When creating the final formula, it is advisable to also monitor the content of substances that may be subject to restrictions under cosmetic legislation, especially in perfume products.

Physical properties

  • INCI: Corylus Avellana Seed Extract
  • Appearance: clear liquid oil
  • Colour: yellow to golden yellow
  • Odour: pronounced, naturally hazelnut-like, typical of roasted hazelnuts
  • Composition according to specification: 100% CO₂-se hazelnut extract of organic quality
  • Character of the extract: contains fixed oil and aromatic compounds, for example ketones, aldehydes and pyrazines
  • Drug-to-extract ratio: 7.0 – 8.0 kg of hazelnuts per 1 kg of extract

Safety and storage

  • Store in a well-closed container, in a dry, cool place, protected from light.
  • Avoid unnecessarily prolonged heating and contact with air in order to preserve the odour profile of the extract.
  • When used in perfume or strongly aromatic products, we recommend performing a test in the final formula.
  • When formulating, also monitor naturally occurring substances that are restricted under current cosmetic legislation.

FAQ

Why does this extract smell more intense than regular hazelnut oil?

Because it is a selective CO₂ extract from roasted hazelnuts in which the aromatic substances responsible for the typical warm nutty odour are particularly concentrated. Regular pressed oil is usually much milder in odour.

Is this extract also suitable for natural perfumes?

Yes, that is precisely where it performs very well. It gives compositions a gourmand, warm and soft nutty note that suits sweeter, balsamic and winter-themed perfume blends.

Can it affect the colour of the final product?

At lower dosage usually only slightly, but in light-coloured balms or emulsions it may impart a slight yellowish tint. It is therefore advisable to always check the colour on a trial batch.

Is it more suitable for facial or for body cosmetics?

It can be used in both, but it is particularly interesting in body care, balms and fragrance products, where its characteristic scent can stand out more.

Is it suitable for purely aqueous products?

Not directly, because it is a lipophilic extract. In purely aqueous systems it would require a suitable solubilisation or emulsification system.

How should I work with this extract if I do not want it to dominate in the product?

Start with a very low dosage and combine it with softer vanilla, cocoa, balsamic or woody notes. It is an aromatically intense raw material, therefore it is advisable to dose it gradually.
