Peeling shower gel

Back 17. 05. 2022

The exfoliating shower gel will soften your skin and fill you with a pleasant feeling of cleanliness and freshness

Gentle shower gel with a magnolia scent to brighten your skin can now be prepared in the comfort of your own home. Tiny strawberry seeds take care of the gentle removal of dead skin cells, and at the same time these exfoliating particles are biodegradable. Try the exfoliating shower gel according to our instructions, or customize it to your liking with the information in the section on the importance of ingredients and their variations.

PEELING SHOWER GEL - RAW MATERIALS

Below you will find a list of ingredients for the production of the shower gel. As traditionally, the use of tensides is necessary for foaming products and since there is also water in the product, it is also necessary to preserve it. Of course, to make showering more enjoyable, exfoliating particles, a mild magnolia fragrance and coloured mica powder are added.

EXFOLIATING SHOWER GEL - PROCEDURE

1. Disinfect all utensils, containers and packaging that come into contact with the product or raw materials, for example with ethanol.
2. In a bowl or other container, combine the glycerine, sucraclear and mica powder, mix thoroughly until a thick, lump-free slurry is formed.
3. Add water to Phase A and mix thoroughly with a milk frother or stick blender. The aim is to obtain a gel with as few lumps as possible. Any lumps that cannot be removed will disappear naturally after a few hours by hydrating the sucraclear.
4. Add a mixture of tensides - decyl glucoside and caprylyl/caprylyl glucoside. Stir gently as the mixture may foam.
5. Adjust the pH to between 4.5 and 5.5 by slowly adding lactic acid drop by drop and continuously checking the pH, for example by using pH paper. The amount of lactic acid given is only a guide, depending on the accuracy of weighing, changes in the recipe or the quality of the ingredients.
6. Once the pH has been adjusted , add the fragrance oil, preservative and strawberry seeds and mix thoroughly again. Pour the product into the selected container.

SCRUB SHOWER GEL - TIPS AND TRICKS

When making exfoliating shower gel, it's a good idea to have a milk frother or stick mixer handy. r when making larger volumes, as it will make it quicker and easier to create a gel-like consistency.

Sucraclear is responsible for the gel formation, this substance also allows the peeling particles to stay in the air. In our tests, we observed that the viscosity of the product drops slightly on the second day, which is why a slightly larger dose of Sucraclear was used. On the other hand, heating the gel to 70 °C (as recommended by the manufacturer) did stabilize the gel more, i.e. on the other hand, the gel was not able to hold the heavier peeling particles dispersed and the strawberry seeds sank to the bottom, only the mica powder remained evenly dispersed.

When incorporating the tensides, you can use a milk frother in addition to stirring with a spoon or stick, especially if you feel that the gel is not combining with the tensides. However, stir carefully as the product will foam when stirred vigorously.

The amount of lactic acid used is a guide only. Always remember to check the pH of the product before adding sensitive ingredients such as preservatives. Decyl glucoside and caprylyl/caprylyl glucoside have an alkaline pH which would not be comfortable for the skin, therefore pH adjustment is necessary. Add lactic acid dropwise, mixing the mixture well after each addition and testing the pH until it reaches a value between 4.5 and 5.5.

PEELING SHOWER GEL - THE IMPORTANCE OF INGREDIENTS AND THEIR VARIATIONS

Do you like exfoliating shower gels but want to give these products a touch of originality? Below you will find hints and tips with which to personalise your shower gel. At the same time, you'll learn more about the importance of the ingredients and why they were used in the production of the exfoliating shower gel.

TENZIDY

Tensides are the basis for the production of shower gels. These are foaming, cleansing and degreasing agents that combine well with water and other water-soluble raw materials. Glucosides, which are characterized by their alkaline pH, have been used in the manufacture of our product. It was therefore also necessary to adjust their pH by adding lactic acid.

If you want to substitute a tenside in the product, please take into account that there will be a significant change in the properties of the product. Not only do the tensides have a different pH and thus change the amount of lactic acid needed, but they also have different foaming properties and compatibility or concentration (the tensides are not 100 % lactic acid).tensides, but are sold as dilute solutions, so always check the ASM value of the tenside so that your product is not too concentrated and therefore irritating to the skin).

DEMINERALISED WATER

The second big item among the raw materials of exfoliating shower gel is distilled or demineralized water. Of course, you can substitute distilled water with your choice of hydrolates. However, be aware that hydrolates have different pH values and so the amount of lactic acid needed to achieve a physiological skin pH (4.5 to 5.5) will change.

SUCRACLEAR

The thickening and gel-forming agent in the exfoliating shower gel is sucraclear. It is a fine white powder of plant origin that thickens various products and forms water-based gels. Its advantage is that it helps to keep the exfoliating particles or mica powders evenly dispersed in the product.

If you want to substitute sucraclear, try xanthan gum, for example. However, count on the fact that xanthan gum has trouble dispersing heavier particles evenly than strawberry seeds.

GLYCERINE

The moisturizing and hydrating ingredient in an exfoliating shower gel is glycerin. This is a type of alcohol commonly found in cosmetics, it is well soluble in water. At the same time, it helps to moisturize powdered raw materials such as vegetable gums, sucraclear or hyaluronic acid, thus reducing the time for lumps to disappear and forming homogeneous gels.

Should you omit glycerin from the product, expect more lumps of sucralar to form in the shower gel and it will take longer for them all to disappear.

EXFOLIATING PARTICLES

Strawberry seeds are an unconventional way to spice up your shower gel. However, they are not the only exfoliating particles available. You can reach for ground pumice powder or various ground nut or almond shells. Choose exfoliating particles that are not water-soluble (salt and sugar are therefore not suitable). Alternatively, you can omit the exfoliating particles altogether.

LACTIC ACID

The acid chosen to adjust the pH was just lactic acid. It has the advantage that it is quite concentrated and is sold in solution form, so you don't have to prepare your own solution or wait for it to dissolve.

Alternatives to lactic acid are other organic acids such as citric acid. Its disadvantage is that it is a solid, so you have to prepare a solution in advance to adjust the pH.

MICA POWDER

Mica powders are versatile colouring agents in cosmetics and can give your products a variety of shades. Mica powders require the addition of a suitable thickener or other agent to prevent them from sinking to the bottom - in this case, sucraclear was chosen. Mica powders can be omitted from the product altogether, or any shade can be chosen.

FRAGRANCE OIL

The delicate magnolia scent of the product was given by the fragrance oil. This is a synthetically prepared compound, as not all plants provide fragrant essential oils in sufficient quantities. Of course, you can use essential oils instead of fragrance oils, or you can skip the perfuming altogether and replace the amount of fragrance oil used with water.

CONSERVANT

Last but not least, a preservative is necessary for the durability and safety of the product. Since the product contains water, which microorganisms need for life, you must add a preservative or your product will succumb to rapid microbial spoilage. Cosgard was chosen as the preservative, it is an Ecocert and COSMOS approved preservative that is most effective in acidic pH, ideally below 5.5.

Cosgard can be substituted with another broad spectrum preservative that will be effective at the acidic pH of the product.

NOTICE

As mentioned, you can experiment with homemade recipes to achieve the desired properties. However, many factors such as humidity, temperature, quality of ingredients and storage can affect the final result.

Before using any raw material to make a cosmetic product, familiarize yourself with its properties, recommended dosage, storage conditions or safe handling. Any raw material may have the potential to cause an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals, so before using a product, we recommend that you find out if you suffer from an allergy to any of the raw materials or the overall product, e.g. by a skin test.

If you have very sensitive or very acne-prone skin, or other skin and health problems, we recommend that you consult a medical professionalbefore applying a new product to your skin, whether it is a homemade cosmetic product, a pure raw material or a commercially available product.
