Product description

Unrefined shea butter is obtained from the kernels of the fruits of Vitellaria paradoxa. After harvesting, the seeds are processed using traditional or mechanical methods and the fat fraction is then separated without refining, so the butter retains its natural character, colour, texture and accompanying substances. It is precisely this minimal processing that is the reason why unrefined shea butter is a sought-after raw material in the production of natural cosmetics intended for dry, stressed and discomfort-prone skin.
In cosmetic formulations it is valued especially for its emollient, protective and nourishing effect. On the skin it creates a pleasant protective film, improves comfort in case of dryness and contributes to a supple feeling after application. It must also be taken into account that this butter has a strong scent typical of unrefined shea butter, which is a natural property of the raw material and can affect the final fragrance profile of the finished product.

Key benefits

  • Intensively softens and replenishes lipids in dry, rough and stressed skin.
  • Supports the skin’s protective barrier and reduces the feeling of tightness.
  • Contains a naturally occurring unsaponifiable fraction, valued in treatment cosmetics.
  • Gives formulations richness, nourishment and a protective character.
  • Suitable for the care of the skin of the body, hands, lips and hair ends.
  • In anhydrous cosmetics it improves the consistency and spreadability of the product.

Suitable for products such as

  • body butters and whipped body butters
  • lip balms and protective sticks
  • creams for hands, feet and dry areas
  • nourishing facial and body balms
  • regenerating ointments and massage balms
  • cold-processed soaps
  • hair masks and nourishing hair balms
  • protective winter cosmetics

Use in formulation

  • Shea butter is miscible with vegetable oils, waxes, esters and other vegetable butters.
  • It is compatible with the oil phase of emulsions as well as anhydrous formulations.
  • Most often it is incorporated into the oil phase, where it affects the nourishing power and the final consistency of the product.
  • During production it is recommended to heat only gently so as not to unnecessarily alter the natural character of the raw material.
  • In richer products it can form a significant part of the formula; in lighter emulsions it is combined with liquid oils for a softer skin feel.
  • When perfuming, it is necessary to take into account its strong natural scent, especially if you are preparing gently perfumed products.
  • To improve slip and reduce a heavier skin feel it is often combined with lighter oils or drier esters.

Physical properties

  • This is a semi-solid to solid vegetable butter, which gradually melts on contact with the skin.
  • The colour is naturally creamy to pale yellow, and may differ slightly between batches.
  • It has a strong, natural scent typical of unrefined shea butter.
  • It affects the firmness, texture and occlusive character of the finished formulation.

Safety and storage

  • Store in a dry place, well closed and away from direct light.
  • Protect from high temperatures and repeated overheating.
  • When taking the material, pay attention to cleanliness to avoid contamination of the raw material.
  • When manufacturing perfumed products always check how the natural scent of the butter behaves in combination with the fragrance component.
  • Before preparing a larger batch it is recommended to make a trial sample of the formulation.

FAQ

Why can the consistency of shea butter change depending on temperature?

Natural vegetable fats react very sensitively to the ambient temperature. In a cooler environment the butter is harder, at a higher temperature it softens and with repeated temperature changes it may also have a less homogeneous structure.

Is unrefined shea butter also suitable for products without perfume?

Yes, but you have to reckon with the fact that its natural scent will be noticeable in the final product. In products without added fragrance the authentic character of the raw material itself will therefore stand out more.

Why is shea butter often combined with other oils?

Combining it with liquid oils makes it possible to better adjust spreadability, absorption and the final skin feel. In this way the formulator can prepare a richer or, on the contrary, a lighter product according to the intended use.

Is it suitable to use shea butter also for the care of hair ends?

Yes, in a small amount it can also be used on dry and stressed hair ends, especially in balms, masks or anhydrous protective products.

What does it mean that this is an unrefined butter?

It means that the raw material has not undergone a refining process that would significantly modify its natural scent, colour and character. Thanks to this it remains closer to its original form.

Can unrefined shea butter also be a suitable choice for winter cosmetics?

Yes, due to its protective and nourishing character it is very popular in products intended for periods of cold, wind and increased stress on the skin.
