Soy wax KeraSoy Pillar 4120 is a natural soy wax. It has been specially designed to be easily removed from silicone and acrylic molds and is therefore intended for the production of pillar candles. At the same time, it does not form the so‑called “frosting” effect on the surface (frozen flower effect); the candles are beautifully smooth and glossy after being removed from the mold. It can also be used for making wax melts for aroma lamps. It is manufactured by the company Kerax in Great Britain. The wax is made from soybeans that are GMO, however no GMO is present in the wax itself (it is measured only in the proteins).
It can be colored and holds fragrance well. It is compatible with most fragrance oils and essential oils, achieving the best results specifically with fragrances intended directly for soy waxes. There is no need to add any additional additives. Parts of candles can be remelted and reused, but heating the wax above 85°C is not recommended.
Before you start making candles, study the manufacturing process in detail and test every new combination (whether container, wick, fragrance, color or blends of various waxes) on one small candle and perform a burn test. Only when the burn result is fully satisfactory should you start producing candles in larger quantities. This will help you avoid unnecessary disappointment and the devaluation of a large amount of material.
How to melt the wax: We recommend melting the wax and keeping it warm at a temperature of around 70°C. The melting point of the wax is 45.5°C. Continuous stirring during melting is important to prevent scorching. Just before the wax is completely melted, it is recommended to reduce the heating power. Avoid prolonged heating of the wax above 85°C.
How to color the wax: If you want to color the wax using special candle dyes, we recommend briefly increasing the temperature of the wax so that the dyes dissolve and disperse properly. Ideally, mix the dye with a small amount of wax, heat it to 75°C and mix thoroughly. Then stir this colored portion into the cooler wax, heated to 45 - 60°C, again taking care to mix and incorporate the dye into the wax thoroughly. The dye must be evenly dispersed. If you want to create darker shades of color, add a small amount of black.
How to add fragrances: You can add fragrance to candles using essential oils or fragrance oils, or a combination of both. Before using the fragrances themselves, verify that they are fully soluble in oils (all fragrances from our range can be used in candles and are soluble in oils). The amount depends on the type of fragrance used. In general, fragrance oils are much more concentrated and therefore a smaller amount is sufficient compared to essential oils. Fragrance oils are already blended fragrance compositions, whereas essential oils are pure single‑note scents that we recommend blending to achieve the ideal result. You can read more about the difference between fragrance oils and essential oils in the articles Fragrance Oils and Essential Oils. For this type of wax, 5 - 10 % of fragrance components is ideal. It is best to add the fragrance components just before pouring the wax into containers. After adding the fragrance, we recommend stirring the wax for 1-2 minutes to achieve optimal dispersion of the fragrance.
How to choose the right wick: The optimal wick size depends on the final dimensions of the candle. In general, candles with a larger diameter require a stronger wick or the use of more than one wick. In addition, blends of vegetable waxes have much higher viscosity than paraffin waxes and therefore require stronger burning wicks. We strongly emphasize that every combination of wick and wax must be properly tested before you start producing candles. Since wick burning is influenced not only by the diameter of the candle and the type of wax used, but also by the type and amount of added dyes, we cannot guarantee correct and trouble‑free burning for every combination. The final wick selection should always be confirmed by individual testing by the customer. We recommend carrying out the first test using only pure wax and, if you are satisfied with the burn results, gradually adding various concentrations of fragrances and dyes. It is also very useful to keep the individual samples for a certain period so that you can return to the various combinations later.
Mold preparation: Molds should be clean, dry and free of any contaminants. They should be at least at room temperature, but preheating them to approximately 45-50°C provides advantages in the form of easy removal of candles from the molds.
Pouring the wax: We recommend pouring the melted and heated wax, supplemented with the desired fragrances and colors, at a temperature of 55 - 65°C into preheated molds. The specific pouring temperature of the wax must be adjusted to the room temperature and other individual conditions. However, the time during which the wax is kept at a higher temperature should be minimized – this will prevent the loss of the top notes of your fragrances and also the formation of cracks and cavities during cooling.
Cooling the wax: After pouring the wax into the container with the wick, it needs to be allowed to cool down gradually. Rapid cooling can cause the formation of cracks and cavities. Leave the candle to stand for at least 24 hours before lighting it for the first time. If a crack or small cavity (the center sinks) forms on the surface of the candle, finish the candle by pouring a small amount of melted wax onto the surface or by heating the surface of the candle with a hot air gun.
The wax is biodegradable and also suitable for vegans. No animal products are used in its production and no tests on animals have been carried out. This wax is supplied in the form of granules.
