Product description

Stearin for candle making is a solid lipid raw material used as a primary or auxiliary component of candle masses. It is a mixture of higher fatty acids, predominantly stearic acid, obtained by hydrolysis and subsequent fractionation of fats. This type of stearin is of palm origin, i.e. a raw material of plant origin obtained from processed vegetable oils.
In candle making, stearin is used mainly to increase the hardness of candles, improve their shape stability and optimize burning, especially for candles made of paraffin or blended waxes.

Key benefits

  • Increases hardness and strength of the candle mass.
  • Improves shape stability and reduces deformation at higher temperatures.
  • Optimizes burning – helps achieve more even combustion.
  • Reduces shrinkage of candles during cooling.

Suitable for products such as

  • poured and drawn candles
  • pillar and taper candles
  • candles made of paraffin and paraffin blends
  • blended candles with vegetable waxes
  • technical and decorative candles

Use in formulation

  • Miscible with paraffin and selected vegetable waxes.
  • Soluble in hot fatty and wax phases.
  • Commonly used as an additional component to adjust the properties of the base wax.
  • It is recommended to add it during cooling (at a temperature below 40 °C).

Safety and storage

  • Raw material intended for technical and candle making use.
  • When handling the molten material, ensure protection against burns.
  • Store in a dry and cool place, away from sources of heat.
  • Protect from direct sunlight and moisture.

FAQ

What is the difference between stearin and paraffin?

Stearin is a mixture of fatty acids of vegetable origin, whereas paraffin is a petroleum product. Stearin increases hardness and improves burning, paraffin is softer and a cheaper base.

Is this stearin suitable for purely vegetable candles?

Yes, since it is of palm origin, it can be used in vegetable or blended candles, provided this corresponds to the manufacturer’s philosophy.

Does stearin affect the colour or scent of the candle?

Stearin is generally without a pronounced odour and has only a minimal effect on the final colouring of the candle.

Is it necessary to adjust the wick when using stearin?

Yes, the addition of stearin can affect burning, therefore it is recommended to test the appropriate thickness and type of wick.

Why is stearin added to candles?

It is used to improve mechanical stability, reduce shrinkage and achieve more even burning of the candle.
