TAED, sodium percarbonate activator, blue (INCI: Tetraacetylethylendiamine; CAS: 10543-57-4) is an organic compound used as an oxygen bleach activator in laundry and cleaning formulations. From a technological point of view, it is a product of chemical synthesis (acetylation of ethylenediamine), which is subsequently processed into granules for use in powders and tablets. The “blue” version usually means that the TAED is colour coded (e.g. with a trace pigment or a coloured surface of the granules) for easier identification, visual control of dosing or differentiation from other white powder ingredients. In combination with sodium percarbonate it increases the effectiveness already at lower temperatures – in the wash liquor it promotes the formation of peracetic acid, which improves stain removal and the hygienic effect typically in the range of 30–60 °C (compared to percarbonate without activator). The exact type of dye/pigment used in “blue” TAED is not available without the attached technical data sheet.
The activation efficiency is determined by the TAED itself (Tetraacetylethylendiamine). The colour is usually only an identification modification of the granules; without a technical data sheet it is not possible to confirm whether another functional additive is present.
At correct dosing and with sufficient dissolution in the wash liquor, it should not. The risk may increase with direct application to dry textiles or with too little water; it is recommended to first dissolve/disperse the blend in water.
Moisture may reduce the stability of the oxygen system (especially if percarbonate is present) and lead to decreased performance or caking. TAED is optimised for dry powder/tablet applications.
TAED on its own does not have the same oxidative performance as a complete oxygen system. It works best as an activator in the presence of peroxide (from percarbonate), which is the source of active oxygen.
At a lower temperature TAED brings the greatest benefit, but the dosage depends on the amount of percarbonate, water hardness and soil level. Start conservatively (e.g. at approximately 5 % relative to percarbonate) and adjust according to the result and the specific formulation.
