Product description
The white plastic 150 ml bottle with a black and gold pump is a ready-made set for liquid and semi-liquid cosmetic products that are dispensed by pressing the pump. The PET bottle has a 24/410 neck finish and the pump matches it, so you only need to fill the set and screw it on. The white wall of the bottle hides the contents, which is useful for products that change shade over time or in which ingredients settle. The whole set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics.
What the set is suitable for
The pump dispenses approximately 1 ml of product per press, which corresponds to a common dose for everyday use. A bottle with a pump is therefore filled with products where the user will appreciate a measured dose without opening the packaging:
- Body and face lotions – thinner emulsions that the pump draws up and dispenses without effort.
- Liquid soaps and cleansing gels – for washing hands or face, where the product is dispensed straight into the palm.
- Light creams and fluids – as long as they are not too thick.
- Massage and body oils – the pump dispenses oil cleanly, without it running down the neck.
- Cleansing milks and micellar waters – the pump works just as well at low viscosity; the dose simply feels thinner.
The black and gold pump gives the white bottle a more striking look. It is used for finished products for sale as well as for homemade cosmetics that you want to keep labelled and within reach on the shelf.
How the pump works
The dip tube reaches the bottom of the bottle and, when the head is pressed, the product is pushed out through the nozzle. The first few presses after screwing on the pump fill the tube and the head, and only then does the pump deliver a full dose. How easily it pumps is determined by the consistency of the product. A thick cream with a high proportion of solid fats may pump with difficulty or remain in the tube, whereas with an emulsion of milk consistency this is usually not a problem. Before filling a larger batch, it is worth filling one bottle and testing whether the pump delivers an even dose with the given recipe.
The tube can no longer reach the remainder at the bottom of the bottle. You can open the bottle at the end and take out the remainder, or allow for this reserve when calculating the number of doses.
Filling and volume
The nominal volume is the volume the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The brimful volume is the physical volume up to the neck and is usually higher. The difference is a reserve for the pump with its dip tube, which takes up part of the space once screwed on, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The bottle is therefore filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim.
When filling, leave free space below the neck for the pump tube. If you fill the bottle to the brim, the contents will be pushed out when you screw the pump on and will soil the thread, which will then seal less well.
Emulsions and gels are filled into PET only after they have cooled to room temperature. A hot mass can deform the plastic wall and, as the contents cool, negative pressure forms in the bottle, which makes the first pumping more difficult.
A PET bottle is not intended for filling with hot masses. Let the emulsion cool while stirring continuously and fill it only once it has cooled.
Good to know
Before the first filling, and before every further use with a new recipe, the bottle and the pump are washed, disinfected and left to dry completely. The procedure is described in the questions below.
Products with a high proportion of essential oils, alcohol or solvents should first be tested with the PET bottle and the plastic parts of the pump. If you combine the bottle with a different closure, check the tightness, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation. You can find closures with the same neck type and other ready-made combinations in the Handymade range.
Only the white 150 ml bottle on its own has a food contact certificate; the pump does not. The set as a whole is therefore intended for cosmetics. The PET bottle is recyclable, while the pump consists of parts made of PP and aluminium, so it should be separated from the bottle before recycling.
