Product description

This is a cross wooden wick with a width of 9.525 mm, supplied complete with a metal sustainer that holds it perpendicular to the bottom of the container. It is designed for candle-making in containers as a replacement for the classic cotton wick. The wooden tab burns with a wider, calm flame and crackles softly while burning, which is characteristic of wooden wicks. The cross design – two tabs joined in an X shape – draws more melted wax to the flame than a single flat wick, making it particularly suitable for wider containers.

The wick is made in the USA from certified wood; the manufacturer describes it as natural, allergen-free and biodegradable. Thanks to the sustainer, no preparation or threading is needed – simply slide the wick into the sustainer, secure the sustainer to the bottom and pour the wax.

Why choose a cross wooden wick

  • Larger flame and wider melt pool – two tabs in an X shape draw more melted wax to the flame, so the candle surface melts more evenly even across larger container diameters.
  • Crackling while burning – wood crackles softly as it burns, giving the candle the character of an open fire.
  • Upright positioning in the container – the metal sustainer keeps the tabs perpendicular during pouring and setting, so the wick does not lean and the flame does not burn toward the container wall.
  • Easy handling – no stretching or centring tools required; the sustainer is simply adhered to the centre of the bottom.
  • Natural material – wooden tab with no synthetic core, allergen-free and biodegradable according to the manufacturer's data.

How to work with the set

Secure the sustainer to the centre of the container bottom – most commonly with a wick sticker or hot glue – and slide the cross wick into its slot. After pouring the wax and allowing it to set fully, trim the wick just above the wax surface. A wooden wick requires shorter trimming than a cotton one: a tab that is too long produces soot and an unsteady flame, while one that is too short will drown in the melted wax.

The designation .02 indicates the tab thickness in the manufacturer's system – a higher number means a thicker tab. The choice of wick width and thickness depends on the container diameter, wax type and fragrance oil percentage, so each combination should be verified by a test burn.

During the test burn, let the candle burn until the entire surface has melted and check whether the wax reaches the container wall, whether the flame produces soot and whether the wick stays lit. If the melt pool does not form fully, a wider or thicker wick is needed; if the flame smokes and the container overheats, use a narrower or thinner wick.

Good to know

  • Wax – with harder waxes and a high fragrance oil content, it is worth testing several tab thicknesses to ensure the wick can draw the wax at a sufficient rate.
  • First burn – the first lighting should last until the entire candle surface has melted; otherwise a tunnel forms and the wick will later drown.
  • Lighting – wood ignites more slowly than cotton; hold the flame to the tab until it catches across its full width.
  • Maintenance – before each subsequent lighting, remove the charred tip of the tab.
  • Intended use – the set is intended solely for candle-making; it is not declared for contact with cosmetic products or food.

A cross wick produces a larger flame than a flat wick and therefore belongs only in containers designed for candles and capable of withstanding heat. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Suitable for products such as

  • container candles in glass and tin vessels,
  • candles in wider containers where a flat wooden wick does not melt the entire surface,
  • scented candles where the crackling of the wick is intended to enhance the atmosphere.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a cross and a flat wooden wick?
A cross wooden wick consists of two tabs joined in an X shape; a flat wick is a single tab. Two tabs draw more wax to the flame, so the cross wick burns with a larger flame, creates a wider melt pool and handles larger container diameters more effectively. A flat wick is better suited to smaller containers and a gentler burn.
What container diameter is the 9.525 mm cross wooden wick suitable for?
An exact container diameter cannot be determined without a test burn, as it depends on the wax type and fragrance oil percentage. The cross design is intended primarily for medium to wider containers where a single flat wick does not melt the entire surface. It is recommended to pour a test candle and check whether the melt pool reaches the container wall.
How is a cross wooden wick secured in the container?
The wick is secured using the metal sustainer included in the set. The sustainer is adhered with a wick sticker or hot glue to the centre of the container bottom, the wick is slid into its slot and the container is filled with wax. The sustainer keeps the tabs perpendicular during pouring and setting, so no centring tools are needed.
Why does the wooden wick not burn or keep going out?
The most common cause is an incorrect wick height or wax that is not flowing to the tab. A wick that is too long produces soot and goes out; one that is too short drowns in the melted wax – wooden wicks are trimmed shorter than cotton ones. If the wick keeps going out even after trimming, the wax may be too hard for the given tab thickness or may contain a high proportion of fragrance oil – in that case, a thicker tab or a reformulated recipe will help.
What does the .02 designation on a wooden wick mean?
The designation .02 is the tab thickness in the system used by the manufacturer Makesy; a higher number means a thicker tab. Thickness, together with the 9.525 mm width, determines how much wax the wick draws to the flame. Which combination works for a specific container, wax and fragrance is verified through test burning.
How short should a wooden wick be trimmed?
A wooden wick is trimmed just above the wax surface, shorter than a cotton wick. Before each lighting, the charred tip is removed to prevent the flame from sputtering or producing soot. A wick that is too long creates an unsteady flame and overheats the container; one that is too short will drown once the wax melts.
