Product description

Wooden wick .02 yellow, 15.9 mm – coloured wick with holder for container candles

Wooden wick in yellow is designed for making candles in containers, glass jars and tumblers. Unlike a cotton wick, it burns as a flat wooden strip: it produces a wider, lower flame and crackles softly while burning, reminiscent of a fireplace. The yellow colour of the strip remains visible in the finished candle, making it suitable wherever the wick should complement the wax, fragrance or packaging.

The wick is supplied as a complete set with a metal holder that keeps the strip upright on the bottom of the container. No separate fixing is needed – the wick is simply placed during pouring.

Key features

  • Single-ply – the wick consists of a single flat wooden strip with a width of 15.9 mm. It is a straightforward type suitable for beginners working with wooden wicks as well as for standard container candles.
  • Thickness .02 – the manufacturer's designation for strip thickness; a higher number indicates a thicker strip. Thickness combined with width determines how much wax the wick draws and how wide a melt pool it forms.
  • Yellow colour – a dyed wooden strip that forms part of the candle's appearance both before and during burning.
  • Certified wood – the strip is made in the USA from wood with a certified origin. The manufacturer states that the wick is natural, allergen-free and biodegradable.
  • Holder included – a round metal holder with a circular base into which the strip slides. The same holder type is compatible with straight, double and cross wooden wicks, so it can also be used with other wicks from the range.

How to work with the wick

The strip is inserted into the metal holder and the holder is fixed to the bottom of the container – typically with a wick sticker or a drop of hot wax. The container is then filled with wax so that the wick remains centred and upright. Once the wax has set, the strip is trimmed to a few millimetres above the surface. A wooden wick that is too long burns with a tall, sooty flame; one that is too short may fail to catch.

Before the first lighting, it is advisable to let the candle set and cure fully so that the wax adheres well to the strip. A wooden wick is lit across the full width of its top edge, not at a single point. A lighter with an extended flame works best.

Before producing a larger batch, test the wick in the specific wax, container and fragrance you intend to use. The behaviour of a wooden wick depends on the wax type, container diameter and fragrance load, so the suitability of a given size should always be confirmed with a test burn.

Which candles it is suited for

  • Candles in glass jars and tumblers – a wooden wick needs the support of a holder and a container wall to contain the molten wax. It is not intended for freestanding candles without a container.
  • Scented interior candles – the lower flame and crackling give the candle a different character than a cotton wick.
  • Colour-coordinated collections – the yellow strip is useful where the candle is meant to feel cohesive in yellow, orange or amber tones, or as a contrast in pale wax.

Good to know

Wooden wicks are sensitive to the length of the strip above the surface. If the flame rises high, produces smoke or carbon forms on the top edge, the strip needs to be trimmed. If the flame weakens or goes out, the wax is too hard for that wick size – a thicker strip or a double wick will help.

A width of 15.9 mm determines how wide a melt pool will form. Narrower containers may require a narrower wick; wider containers may need a wider one or a combination of two wicks. The right size is selected by test burning in the specific container.

A high fragrance load or coloured wax can cause a wooden wick to burn differently than in plain wax. This is another reason to test the final formulation, not just the wax alone.

The holder from the pack can be reused with other straight, double and cross wooden wicks, so switching to a different strip size does not require changing the fixing method.

Frequently asked questions

Is the wooden wick .02 yellow suitable for soy wax?
Yes, wooden wicks are commonly used in soy wax, but the specific size should be confirmed with a test burn. Soy and other softer natural waxes behave differently than paraffin, so melt rate and pool width may vary. If the flame weakens, a shorter strip or a thicker or double wick will help.
How is a wooden wick fixed in the container?
The strip is inserted into the metal holder from the pack and the holder is fixed to the bottom of the container with a wick sticker or a drop of hot wax. The holder keeps the wick upright during pouring and after the wax has set. When pouring, it is advisable to centre the wick so that the candle burns evenly and the container does not heat unevenly on one side.
How short should a wooden wick be trimmed?
A wooden wick is trimmed to a few millimetres above the wax surface. A strip that is too long burns with a tall, sooty flame; one that is too short may not catch. Before each subsequent lighting it is advisable to remove any carbon from the top edge and adjust the length again.
What does thickness .02 mean for a wooden wick?
Thickness .02 is the manufacturer's designation for the thickness of the wooden strip; a higher number indicates a thicker strip. A thicker strip draws more wax and creates a wider melt pool, making it suitable for harder waxes and wider containers. The .02 strip with a width of 15.9 mm is a basic type for standard container candles and softer waxes.
Why does a wooden wick crackle, and is that normal?
Yes, gentle crackling is typical of wooden wicks and is one of the reasons they are used. It occurs as the wood burns and moisture in the strip evaporates. If the crackling is very loud and accompanied by spitting, it is usually a sign of a wick that is too long or a strip that has absorbed moisture.
What is the difference between a single-ply and a double wooden wick?
A single-ply wick consists of one strip; a double wick has two strips bonded together and draws more wax. The single .02 strip is suited to standard container candles and softer waxes. A double wick is chosen for wider containers or harder waxes where a single strip cannot maintain a sufficiently wide melt pool. Both types fit the same holder.
