A wooden wick with a metal sustainer is designed for making container candles where, in addition to the flame, a gentle crackling reminiscent of a fireplace is intended. The flat wooden strip gives the candle a different flame appearance and character than a classic cotton wick.

The set consists of a single-layer crackling wick and a metal sustainer that holds it upright on the bottom of the container. The wick is made from certified wood. The manufacturer describes it as natural, allergen-free, and biodegradable.

What makes this wick interesting

Sound during burning – a wick made from a single thin strip belongs to a series designed for crackling burn. The intensity of the sound may vary between formulations.

Use in candle making

Insert the wick into the sustainer and secure the sustainer in the centre of the container's base using an adhesive dot or a drop of melted wax. Pour the wax slowly and away from the wick to prevent the sustainer from shifting.

After the wax has set completely, trim the wick to a few millimetres above the wax surface. The exact height is best determined by a test burn, so it is worth starting with a longer trim and adjusting gradually.

If the flame weakens or goes out shortly after lighting, the wick is most often too long. Trim it and remove the charred tip from the previous burn.

Choosing width and thickness

The wick width is selected according to the inner diameter of the container and the type of wax. This wick has a width of 12.7 mm. The designation .04 is the manufacturer's indicator of strip thickness; a higher number means a thicker strip.
