Product description

A wooden crackling wick with a metal stand is designed for making container candles where the burn is meant to be accompanied by quiet crackling reminiscent of a fireplace. The wick consists of a single wood slat. The set includes a metal stand that holds the wick perpendicular to the bottom of the container.

The pack contains 100 wicks and 100 stands. This makes it suitable for small candle production runs as well as testing multiple combinations of wax, fragrance and container. The short variant is intended for lower containers.

How a wooden wick differs from a cotton wick

Burn sound – the single-slat wick belongs to the crackling series and crackles gently while burning. The intensity of the sound varies between different candles.
Easy installation – the slat slides into the stand and is placed in the centre of the container. The stand holds it in a vertical position.
Material – the wick is made from certified wood. The manufacturer describes it as natural, allergen-free and biodegradable.

How to work with the wick

The wick is inserted into the stand and the stand is fixed to the centre of the bottom of a clean, dry container. Wax is then poured slowly away from the wick so the stand does not shift.

Once the candle has set, the wick is trimmed short above the wax surface. A wick that is too long burns unevenly, may produce smoke or extinguish itself.

Before each subsequent lighting, remove the charred part of the wick. Residue from charred wood is a common cause of a weak flame.

Selecting width and testing

The wick width determines how much wax the flame melts. A wick with a width of 6.4 mm is used in containers with a smaller diameter. With the right choice, the wax pool melts to the container wall during burning. If unmelted wax remains along the sides, the wick is too narrow for the container. If the flame is tall and the container heats up noticeably, the wick is too wide.

In addition to the width, the slat also carries a thickness designation .04. This is a manufacturer's code where a higher number indicates a thicker slat. Burn performance is also affected by wax type, the proportion of fragrance or essential oil, and dye.

Every new combination of wax, fragrance, dye and container must be verified with a test burn. The candle should be supervised throughout the entire burn during testing.

Good to know

On the first burn, let the candle burn until the entire wax surface has melted. This prevents tunnelling around the wick.
Wood is a natural material, so individual slats may vary slightly in grain and shade.
The wick is intended exclusively for candle making.
