Product description

A matte amber glass medicine bottle with a volume of 30 ml and a black and gold dropper makes a ready-to-use packaging set for liquid preparations that are applied by the drop. Amber glass lets less light through to the contents and the matte surface scatters it further, so the set is especially suitable for facial serums, facial oils, essential oil blends in a carrier oil and tinctures, whose ingredients change colour or lose potency in light. The dropper lets you take exactly as much as you need, and the rest of the contents stays free of contact with your fingers.

Both the bottle and the dropper have an 18/410 neck finish, so the dropper fits tightly on the neck and the length of the glass tube matches the height of the bottle. The black and gold dropper with matte glass looks finished even without any additional decoration, which you will appreciate for small batches of handmade cosmetics, for samples and for products intended for sale. The bottle and the dropper are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The set is not intended for food.

What the set is suitable for

  • Facial serums and oil serums – dispensing by the drop corresponds to the amount usually applied to the face, and amber glass protects light-sensitive active ingredients.
  • Essential oil blends in a carrier oil – it is mainly the glass that comes into contact with the contents.
  • Tinctures and alcoholic extracts – glass does not react with alcohol, and the matte finish dampens light, which is not good for plant extracts.
  • Beard oil, cuticle oil or oil for hair ends – a small amount for a single use is easier to measure out from a dropper than by pouring from a bottle.
  • Samples and test batches – a volume of 30 ml is enough for trying out a formulation or for a gift or trial pack.

Filling and volume

The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The brimful volume is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck. The difference between them leaves room for the glass tube of the dropper, which displaces part of the contents when screwed in, and for slight expansion of the contents when the temperature changes.

Fill the bottle to the nominal volume of 30 ml, not to the brim. If it is overfilled, the contents overflow through the neck when the dropper is fitted and soil the thread, which then seals less well.

When filling smaller bottles, a small funnel or a syringe without a needle works well. Oil-based and thick serums flow slowly, so fill them at room temperature, not straight from the fridge.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the dropper, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in the bottle will spoil an anhydrous oil-based preparation and put extra strain on the preservative system in water-based formulations.

The glass withstands cleaning and repeated use. However, do not pour a hot mixture into the bottle, as a sudden change in temperature can damage the glass. Let the contents cool to at least lukewarm and only then fill.

The dropper combines glass, aluminium, silicone and plastic. It is mainly the glass tube that comes into contact with the contents; whether the silicone bulb and the plastic parts are suitable depends on the specific formulation.

For contents with a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend checking on a single piece beforehand whether the bulb of the dropper changes shape after a few days and whether the dropper still seals. Compatibility with a specific formulation can only be confirmed by a test with the finished product.

After use the dropper goes back into the bottle, so residues from the skin gradually get into the contents. For water-based and emulsion preparations this increases the demands on preservation; anhydrous oils and tinctures are less sensitive in this respect.

Other closures from the Handymade range also fit the neck with an 18/410 neck finish, and ready-made combinations of a bottle with a closure have their own description. If you make your own combination, check the seal, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

When you have finished using it, the glass bottle belongs in glass recycling. The dropper is made of several materials, so unscrew it before disposal and do not discard it together with the glass.

Frequently asked questions

Does a matte amber medicine bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass lets considerably less light through to the contents than clear glass, and the matte surface scatters it further. This suits serums with light-sensitive active ingredients, vegetable oils prone to oxidation and tinctures. However, no glass offers complete protection, so store the bottle out of direct sunlight.
How much actually fits into a 30 ml bottle with a dropper?
The bottle is designed to be filled to the nominal volume of 30 ml, although its volume to the brim is larger. The remaining space is left for the glass tube of the dropper, which pushes part of the contents upwards when screwed in, and for expansion of the contents in warm conditions. If you fill the bottle right to the brim, the dropper pushes part of the contents out when fitted, and the soiled thread no longer seals well.
Can the glass bottle with a dropper be reused, and how do I clean it?
Yes, once empty you can clean both the bottle and the dropper and fill them again. Wash the bottle in warm water with washing-up liquid, rinse it, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry upside down. Rinse the dropper by repeatedly drawing up and squeezing out water, then alcohol, and leave it to dry freely. A little alcohol loosens oily residues before washing.
Is the set suitable for water-based, alcoholic and oil-based contents?
The glass bottle is suitable for all three types of contents; for the dropper, it depends on the specific formulation. Oils, oil serums and tinctures are common uses for this packaging. You can fill it with water-based and emulsion preparations, but they need reliable preservation because the dropper repeatedly goes back into the bottle. With a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, check beforehand whether the silicone bulb changes shape.
What closure fits this matte medicine bottle apart from the dropper?
Any closure with an 18/410 neck finish fits the bottle. Besides the dropper, it can be, for example, a cap or a sprayer with the same neck type from the Handymade range, and you will find ready-made combinations as separate products. If you make your own combination, test the seal of the filled bottle and how the given contents are dispensed through the chosen closure.
