Product description
This matte amber glass medicine bottle with a silver aluminium cap has a volume of 30 ml. It is used for storing smaller amounts of oils, serums, tinctures and concentrates that should not be exposed to light. Amber glass blocks part of the light, and the matte surface softens it further. Ingredients prone to oxidation, such as vegetable oils or essential oil blends, therefore have more stable conditions in this bottle than in a clear container. The glass does not stain from its contents, does not absorb scents and does not react with common cosmetic ingredients, so it is also suitable for alcohol-based and oil-based contents. The bottle and cap set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products.
What it is suitable for
- Facial and hair oils – a volume of 30 ml corresponds to the usual size of a facial oil or oil serum that is used up before the oil begins to age.
- Tinctures and alcohol extracts – dark glass slows the fading of dyes and the breakdown of light-sensitive substances.
- Essential oil blends and fragrance oils – the scent does not escape through the glass, and the fragrance components do not attack the glass.
- Samples and trial batches – the small volume is suitable for testing a formulation or for setting aside part of a batch until its stability has been verified.
- Concentrates of active ingredients – water-based solutions and serum bases that are dispensed in small amounts and need protection from light.
Cap and sealing
The aluminium cap with an 18/410 neck finish is screwed onto the neck and tightened by hand. Inside, it has an EPE (polyethylene foam) liner, which sits against the rim of the neck and prevents the contents from leaking. The cap does not dispense the contents; the liquid is poured or measured out of the bottle during production. You will find closures with the same neck type and ready-made combinations of the bottle with a dropper or fine mist sprayer in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, we recommend checking the seal and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.
Pure alcohol and a high proportion of essential oils can affect the liner of the cap. Before filling a whole batch, leave one filled bottle to stand for several days and check that the cap seals well and the liner does not change its appearance.
Nominal and total volume
The nominal volume of 30 ml is the amount the bottle is designed for in normal filling. The brimful capacity given in the parameters is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference is a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. If you later replace the cap with a dropper or fine mist sprayer, their dip tube will also fit into this reserve. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim.
Good to know
- Preparation before first filling – wash the bottle and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in an oil-based or anhydrous product reduces its stability.
- Glass and temperature – do not pour a hot emulsion or a melted oil phase into a cold bottle. A sudden temperature difference stresses the glass, and it may crack. Let the contents cool to at least lukewarm first.
- Repeated use – the glass withstands repeated washing and disinfection. Check the cap each time you fill the bottle again, because aluminium may become deformed if the thread is overtightened or the cap is dropped, and then stop sealing.
- Matte surface – matte glass does not show the level of the contents clearly, so the remaining amount is estimated by weight or by tilting the bottle.
- Recycling – the bottle belongs in glass waste, and the aluminium cap is sorted separately as metal.
Fill oils and serums just before closing. The shorter the contents stay open and the less air there is above the surface, the more slowly they oxidise.
