Product description

Amber glass medicine bottle, matte, black cap, 30 ml

A matte amber glass medicine bottle with a black cap for 30 ml of face or hair oil, oil serum, essential oil blend or tincture. Dark glass reduces the amount of light reaching the contents, so it is suitable for products that are gradually degraded by light. The cap is included in the set; simply fill the bottle and close it.

Both the packaging and the closure are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The set is not approved for food contact, so it should not be used for homemade oils, syrups or herbal infusions intended for consumption.

What it is suitable for

The 30 ml volume corresponds to the usual size of a face serum or oil for one to two months of use.

  • Face and hair oils – amber glass limits the light reaching oils that are sensitive to it.
  • Oil serums with active ingredients – a dark container helps light-sensitive ingredients retain their effectiveness for longer.
  • Essential oil blends and fragrance oils – the glass does not react with concentrated fragrance components and does not absorb their scent.
  • Tinctures and alcohol-based extracts – the glass is resistant to alcohol, and the dark colour protects the contents from light.
  • Samples and test batches – a small volume is enough to try out a recipe before making a larger quantity.

“Medicine bottle” is the name of a bottle shape with a narrower neck and straight walls. This packaging has nothing to do with medicines or pharmacy use.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume of 30 ml is the amount the bottle is designed to hold during normal filling. The total brimful volume is the physical volume of the glass up to the rim of the neck, and you will find it in the parameters. The difference between the two values is a reserve for the closure and for expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If the bottle is filled to the neck, the contents are pushed into the thread when closing, and the cap then seals less well.

Cap and dispensing

The black cap made of polypropylene (PP) has an expanded polyethylene (EPE) liner that sits on the neck once tightened and seals the contents. The product is dispensed by tilting the bottle, without a dropper or pump. For oils and serums where an exact dose matters, it is worth considering a dropper with the same neck type.

Closures with an 18/410 neck finish and ready-made bottle and closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. If you combine your own, we recommend checking the tightness, dispensing and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the cap, rinse them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Residual water in the neck or in the cap liner is a common source of contamination in anhydrous oil products.

Filling and storage

You cannot see the contents through the matte amber glass. A colour change or cloudiness in an oil serum can therefore be checked only after opening the bottle or by pouring a small amount onto a light surface.

Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. Let hot phases or freshly prepared infusions cool to at least room temperature before filling. A cold container filled with hot contents may crack. If the recipe requires hot filling, warm the bottle as well so that the temperature difference is as small as possible, and put the cap on only after the contents have cooled.

The polypropylene cap with an EPE liner is resistant to common oils and aqueous solutions. For concentrated essential oils, undiluted fragrance compositions and solvents, we recommend leaving a filled bottle closed for several days and then checking whether the liner has softened, swollen or lost its tightness.

The bottle can be reused after washing and disinfection. Check the cap on repeated use; the liner compresses over time and the tightness decreases. Glass belongs in the glass recycling bin, the cap in plastics.

The set is not approved for food contact. For food use, choose packaging whose parameters state suitability for food contact.

Frequently asked questions

Does a matte amber medicine bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass reduces the amount of light reaching the contents. However, no glass provides complete protection, so even in dark packaging we recommend storing oils, serums with sensitive active ingredients and tinctures away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
How much does a 30 ml medicine bottle actually hold?
The bottle is designed to be filled with 30 ml, which is its nominal volume. The physical volume up to the neck is larger, and you will find it in the parameters as the total brimful volume. The difference is a reserve for the cap and for expansion of the contents, so fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim.
Is an amber glass medicine bottle with a black cap suitable for essential oils?
The glass is suitable: it does not react with essential oils and does not absorb their scent. The cap is made of polypropylene with an EPE liner. For undiluted essential oils and fragrance compositions, we recommend checking the tightness of the liner on one filled bottle over several days and only then filling the whole batch.
Can the medicine bottle be used for aqueous toners or hydrosols?
Yes, both the glass and the cap are resistant to aqueous solutions. However, dispensing by tilting the bottle lets air in each time it is opened, which does not benefit aqueous products without a preservative. A fine mist sprayer with the same neck type is more suitable for hydrosols and toners.
How do I prepare the medicine bottle for repeated filling?
Wash the bottle in warm water with detergent, rinse it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry completely, neck down. Wash the cap in the same way, but do not heat it or dry it on a radiator, as the EPE liner could become deformed. If there is an odour or discolouration from the previous contents, it is better to replace the cap.
