Product description

Bakuchiol is a plant-derived active ingredient from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia, added to cosmetics for the care of mature, tired and uneven skin. It is often referred to as a botanical alternative to retinol, as it acts in a similar direction on skin smoothness and appearance, yet is also suitable for sensitive skin and daytime cosmetics. It contains at least 99% of the active substance and is obtained by CO₂ extraction without chemical solvents.

In a formulation, it serves as an active ingredient with antioxidant action. It is suitable for facial serums, oils and creams for all skin types including sensitive and acne-prone, for eye area products, for scalp care and for lip balms. The raw material holds COSMOS Approved certification, so it can also be used in natural cosmetics with a certificate.

Key benefits

  • Antioxidant protection – captures free radicals generated by UV radiation and pollution, protecting skin cells from oxidative stress.
  • Support for skin renewal – with regular use, it supports skin smoothness, a more even tone and the appearance of fine lines. Results build up gradually, not after the first application.
  • Protection for sensitive skin – it is also suitable for sensitive and reactive skin, making it useful where retinol is introduced with caution.
  • Antimicrobial action – helps maintain the balance of the skin's microflora, which is beneficial in products for oily and acne-prone skin. It does not serve as a preservative in the finished product.
  • Support for the skin barrier – helps the skin retain moisture and reduces its reactivity, which is appreciated in dry and irritated skin.

Use in formulation

Bakuchiol is soluble in alcohol and in oils; it does not dissolve in water. It is added to the oil phase or to anhydrous preparations, where it is blended directly into vegetable oils and esters. In emulsions, we recommend adding it only during the cooling phase below 70 °C to avoid unnecessary heat stress. The raw material has a yellow to brownish colour, which at higher dosages may slightly show in light emulsions.

The recommended dosage is 0.5 – 2%. The lower end of the range is sufficient for regular daily care; higher doses are used in intensive serums for mature skin. The raw material tolerates a pH range of 3.0 – 8.0, so it can be combined with both acidic and neutral formulations.

For an anhydrous facial oil, bakuchiol simply needs to be blended cold into a mixture of vegetable oils at 1%. This creates a straightforward serum without an emulsifier or preservative, which can be used both morning and evening.

The raw material is sensitive to light and oxygen. In the finished product, it is protected by a combination with an antioxidant, such as Tocopherol, and filling into dark packaging with limited air access, ideally with a pump. Bakuchiol has no compatibility restrictions and is commonly combined with vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid as well as AHA and BHA acids.

Suitable for products such as

  • facial serums and oils for mature skin and smoothing fine lines,
  • day and night creams for uneven skin tone and texture,
  • eye area products,
  • serums and emulsions for oily and acne-prone skin,
  • toning oils and serums for the scalp,
  • body oils and balms, or lip balms.

It is intended for leave-on products. In rinse-off products, most of the active substance would be washed off without benefit.

Good to know

The plant Psoralea corylifolia naturally contains psoralens, which can be phototoxic. In this raw material, their content is limited to trace amounts, making bakuchiol suitable for daytime cosmetics as well. Water-based tonics and gels require the oily raw material to be incorporated either through a solubiliser or in a small dose dissolved in alcohol; verify clarity and stability in the finished formulation. During production, work with clean, dry equipment and close the raw material immediately after taking the required dose.

Bakuchiol is a concentrated active ingredient and is not used undiluted directly on the skin. Always incorporate it into a carrier at the recommended dosage and, when working with a new formulation, verify skin tolerance on a small area first.

Frequently asked questions

Is bakuchiol water-soluble?
No, bakuchiol is insoluble in water. It dissolves in alcohol and in vegetable oils and esters, so it is added to the oil phase of emulsions or to anhydrous preparations. It can be introduced into a water-based tonic or gel only with the help of a solubiliser. In that case, we recommend verifying the clarity and stability of the finished product.
What is the difference between bakuchiol and retinol?
Bakuchiol is a plant-derived substance from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia that acts on skin smoothness and appearance in a similar direction to retinol. Retinol is a vitamin A derivative and, due to its potential for irritation, is typically used in evening care. Bakuchiol is also suitable for sensitive skin and daytime cosmetics and tolerates a pH range of 3.0 – 8.0 in formulations.
How much bakuchiol is added to a serum or cream?
Bakuchiol is dosed in serums and creams at 0.5 – 2%. The lower end of the range is sufficient for regular daily care; intensive serums for mature skin typically use around 1 – 2%. Higher dosages may show more noticeably in the colour of a light-toned preparation.
Is bakuchiol suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin?
Yes, bakuchiol is suitable for sensitive, reactive and acne-prone skin. It supports the skin barrier and its antimicrobial action helps keep oily skin in balance. When using a new formulation, it is still advisable to perform a tolerance test on a small area of skin.
Can bakuchiol be combined with vitamin C or acids?
Yes, bakuchiol has no compatibility restrictions and is commonly combined with vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid as well as AHA and BHA acids. It tolerates a pH range of 3.0 – 8.0, so it can be used in more acidic serums as well. With vitamin C, it complements the formulation as an additional antioxidant.
Does bakuchiol need to be added cold?
Bakuchiol can withstand heating, but it is recommended to add it only during the cooling phase at a temperature below 70 °C. In anhydrous oil serums, it is simply blended in cold. Prolonged heating and exposure to air accelerate oxidation, so it is advisable to add the raw material among the last ingredients.
