Product description

Shea butter, refined, organic is a plant-based butter obtained from the kernels of the fruits of the African tree Vitellaria paradoxa (syn. Butyrospermum parkii). The base raw material is shea butter after pressing and subsequent refining, i.e. after a treatment that reduces the natural aroma, colour and part of the accompanying substances responsible for the typical pronounced character of unrefined butter. The result is a softer, lighter and more odor-neutral butter that is very well suited for use in cosmetic formulations where you do not want the raw material to influence the fragrance or colour of the final product. Handymade states for refined shea butter that it is a raw material free of odour and colour, and at the same time explains in its blog that refining and deodorisation improve processing comfort, although they change part of the original character of the butter.

In cosmetics, refined shea butter belongs among the universal lipid raw materials for balms, creams, body butters, protective sticks and richer anhydrous formulations. It is valued in particular for its softening, protective and smoothing effect, its ability to reduce an excessive feeling of skin dryness and for its good compatibility with oils, esters, waxes and other butters. Thanks to refining it is also suitable where a clean sensory profile, a delicate product colour and greater freedom in fragrancing are required. Use in formulation

Recommended dosage: typically 3 – 100 % depending on the product type and the desired texture.
Soluble in fats and oils, insoluble in water.
Miscible with vegetable oils, esters, waxes, emulsifiers and other butters.
Compatible with anhydrous balms, O/W and W/O emulsions and anhydrous oil–butter blends.
In emulsions it is usually incorporated into the oil phase, where it is allowed to melt evenly together with the other lipids.
In anhydrous products it is advisable to monitor the cooling curve, because with slow or uneven solidification the resulting texture may become grainy.
For a softer skin feel it is often combined with lighter oils or esters, and for higher firmness with waxes and harder butters.
At a higher proportion in the formulation it increases the density, nourishment and protective character of the product.

Safety and storage

Store in a well-closed container, in a dry place, protected from light and sources of heat.
With repeated heating and cooling the texture of the raw material may change, so it is advisable to handle it gently and without unnecessarily prolonged heating.
Remove with a clean, dry tool so that moisture and impurities are not introduced.

FAQ

Why can shea butter become slightly grainy over time?

Graininess is usually a consequence of crystallisation of different fatty acids during unsuitable or too slow cooling. It is not a sign of deterioration but a physical change in structure. It can be limited by controlled melting and more even, faster cooling.

Is refined shea butter also suitable for whipped body butters?

Yes, it is very suitable for this, because it has a gentle odour profile and does not overpower added fragrances. In whipped textures it is often combined with liquid oils so that the result is lighter and more airy.

Is this butter also suitable for vegan cosmetics?

Yes, it is a raw material of plant origin, so it is suitable for vegan formulations, provided that the other ingredients used in the recipe correspond to this as well.

Can shea butter affect the hardness of a balm or a stick?

Yes, significantly. On its own it gives fullness and density, but the final firmness is still influenced by the ratio of waxes, liquid oils and other butters. For stick formulations it is always advisable to make a trial batch.

Is refined shea butter better than unrefined?

It is not universally better, but it is more practical in formulas where you need a neutral odour, a lighter colour and less impact of the raw material on the final sensory profile of the product. The choice depends on the goal of the formulation.

With which ingredients is shea butter often combined for a better feel on the skin?

It is often combined with jojoba, almond or apricot oil, or with light esters. Such a combination reduces the heavy feel on the skin while preserving the nourishing character of the product.
