Product description

Shea butter, refined is a vegetable butter known as shea butter, obtained from the kernels of the fruits of the African tree Vitellaria paradoxa (syn. Butyrospermum parkii). In cosmetics, it is a traditional lipid raw material with a high content of fatty acids and naturally occurring unsaponifiables, which make it a valuable component for nourishing, softening and protecting the skin. It is produced by pressing or mechanical processing of the kernels, and in cosmetic manufacturing either unrefined butter with a more natural colour and scent or refined butter with a milder sensorial profile and a more neutral odour is used. At room temperature, shea butter is semi-solid to solid, but it melts well on contact with the skin, leaves a pleasant protective film and improves the feeling of comfort, especially on dry, stressed and weakened skin.

Thanks to its lipid profile, it is oil-soluble and performs very well in emulsions as well as anhydrous products. In formulations, it contributes greater richness, nourishment and better skin slip, while helping to limit excessive transepidermal water loss. It is popular in body, lip, hand, foot and hair care, particularly where the goal is to create a protective, emollient and regenerating base.

Key benefits

  • Intensively nourishes and softens the skin.
  • Helps protect the skin barrier and reduce feelings of dryness and tightness.
  • Improves slip and sensory properties of balms, butters, creams and ointments.
  • Contains naturally present unsaponifiable matter, which is valued in cosmetics for its supportive protective and conditioning effect.
  • Suitable for dry, sensitive and mature skin.
  • Helps to smooth rough areas such as elbows, knees, heels or hands.
  • Also suitable for hair care products for dry, frizzy and damaged hair.

Suitable for products such as

  • body butters and body balms
  • nourishing face creams and night creams
  • lip balms and protective sticks
  • hand and foot creams
  • massage balms and richer treatment products
  • whipped butters and anhydrous body products
  • soaps and solid cosmetic products
  • hair masks, conditioners and leave-on treatments for hair ends

Use in formulation

  • Oil-soluble and miscible with vegetable oils, butters, waxes and the oil phase of emulsions.
  • Compatible with common emulsifiers, anhydrous systems and protective lipid components.
  • Most often incorporated into the oil phase, where it is gently melted together with other lipid raw materials.
  • In formulations, it increases body, creaminess and the conditioning film; at higher dosage the final product may feel greasier and firmer.
  • Suitable for combining with jojoba oil, almond oil, oat oil, squalane, ceramides, panthenol or vitamin E.
  • In emulsions, it is used to support the nourishing and protective character of the formula; in anhydrous products, it forms an important part of the base.
  • If you wish to achieve a lighter sensory profile, it is advisable to combine it with lighter esters or more fluid oils.
  • It is recommended to add it during the cooling phase (at a temperature below 40 °C) when the formulation contains heat-sensitive actives, fragrances or antioxidants added only at the end of manufacture.

Safety and storage

  • Store in a well-closed container, in a dry, cooler place, away from direct light and sources of heat.
  • Use clean and dry tools during handling to avoid introducing moisture and contaminants.
  • When formulating, monitor the oxidative stability of the entire formula; for products with a higher content of unsaturated oils, it may be appropriate to add an antioxidant.
  • Before use in the final product, it is advisable to verify the sensorial profile, stability and compatibility with the other components of the formulation.
  • For sensitive skin or when using a new product, it is advisable to perform a patch test on a small area of skin.

FAQ

What is the difference between unrefined and refined shea butter in cosmetic practice?

The unrefined type has a more natural colour and a more characteristic scent, whereas the refined type is usually more sensorially neutral and easier to incorporate into formulations where you do not want to influence the fragrance or colour of the finished product.

Why does shea butter sometimes feel grainy in the finished product?

If melting and cooling are not carried out correctly, the individual lipid fractions may crystallise unevenly. In practice, complete melting and controlled cooling help to make the texture finer and more homogeneous.

Is shea butter also suitable for summer formulations?

Yes, but usually at a lower percentage or in combination with lighter oils and esters. At higher dosage, the final product may become softer in warmth and feel heavier on the skin, so the formula needs to be adjusted to the season and the intended use.

Does it make sense to combine shea butter with waxes?

Yes. Wax helps increase the firmness, shape stability and adhesion of the product, while shea butter provides suppleness and a better feel during application. This combination is particularly useful in balms, sticks and protective products.

Why is shea butter often used in lip care and for stressed areas?

These areas are often exposed to wind, cold, friction and frequent moisture loss. Shea butter helps create a protective lipid film, improves comfort and leaves the skin surface more supple.

Can shea butter be used in hair products without overburdening the hair?

Yes, especially when used at a reasonable dosage and combined with lighter emollients. It works best in products for dry, thick, curly or chemically treated hair, where higher nourishment is an advantage.
