The choice of wick determines whether the candle burns evenly, without smoking and tunneling, creates an adequate wax pool and releases the full fragrance. You will find cotton wicks (EKO, LX, Stabilo) and wooden wicks (flat, cross, "booster", silent and crackle) as well as holders and pliers for easy centering.
When choosing, consider the diameter of the container, the type of wax (soy, paraffin, blend), the concentration of fragrance and the presence of colorants. Each formula is unique - so always do a burn test with real scent and color at the target pouring temperature.
Practice tip: start with a lower wattage and gradually work your way up. Monitor flame height, pool width after 2-3 hours and any "mushrooming". Trim to ~5 mm before each ignition.
Cotton rows are versatile for both container and pillar candles, easy to match through a range of sizes and deliver a steady, quiet flame. Selected models from the EKO range can be found here: Eko-1, Eko-4, Eko-8, Eko-10, Eko-14. Gentle burning, wide size range and easy power tuning. For higher fragrance doses or dark colours, consider a level larger diameter.
Wooden wicks (flat, cross, "booster", spiral, crackle and "silent") deliver a premium look and the typical crackle effect. They are ideal for soy and blend waxes; in larger diameters, they make it easy to create a wide pool even without two cotton wicks. A strong visual impression and an even pool when sized correctly. Ensure accurate centering and select stand according to type (flat, cross, spiral).
Pot diameter: 6-7 cm = smaller sizes; 7-9 cm = center; 9+ cm = larger, or cross/double wooden wick.Wax: soy usually needs a step "thicker" wick than paraffin; blended waxes are in between. Fragrance and color: higher percentage and heavier perfumes, dark pigments can dampen flame - consider larger size or "booster".Trim: trim to ~5 mm before each lighting; reduces smoking and "mushrooming".Burn test: monitor pool after 2-3 hours, vessel wall temperature, and wick length during cycle.
For convenient production, use metal brackets and sheet metal pliers for centering. For wooden cross and spiral wicks, choose a matching stand and maintain perpendicularity when watering. Precise centering and fixing = stable flame and level pool.
Cotton wick is versatile, quiet and accurately sized. Wooden delivers a crackling effect and premium look, fits wider pots and soy/blend waxes. Decide by container diameter, wax type and scent profile.
The composition of the fragrance, its concentration and the presence of colorants change the viscosity and vaporization of the fuel. Test each fragrance separately with realistic dosage and color; often a small adjustment in wick size or type is needed.
If the pot is wide, the scent is dense, or the wax is more difficult to melt, a "booster"/cross wick will increase the heat output and width of the pool while maintaining the character of the wood flame.
Trim to ~5mm, consider a smaller size or scent/dye adjustment. With soy waxes, a slight "cap" is common; trimming and tuning the size properly will minimize it.
